The valleys of the Sanne

A lovely, varied walk through the valleys surrounding the Sanne, on the edge of the Rhône valley. It offers beautiful views and passes by two pretty chapels.

Please note! This walk is not recommended on days with heavy rain, as there are three fords to cross.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the Saint-Romain-de-Surieu sports car park, walking eastwards alongside the Social Centre, along the road that leads to La Chapelle de Surieu. Take the first road up on the left (Montée du Dorier).

(1) Soon, you will see the Saint-Romain Chapel on your left. Take the time to walk around it. It is very simple but particularly pretty (there is a water tap along the wall, outside). Back on the road, continue climbing until you reach a T-junction.

(2) Turn right towards Les Limones. Leave the road to Assieu on your left and continue straight ahead. When you reach a fork, take the left branch (towards La Limone).

(3) At the second house on the right, where the tarmac turns to dirt, continue to the large tree and immediately take the grassy path up to the right. At a T-junction, take the very discreet grassy path on the left. It quickly turns right and continues uphill. It joins another grassy path, which you take on the right. You will come to a small road, which you take on the left. You will arrive at the Rigoudy farm, on a small road, in a bend.

Turn left (straight ahead). At a crossroads, turn right and then immediately right again (Impasse de la Gerbaudière).

(4) Almost immediately, turn onto the dirt track that leaves to the left of the house (if you continue on the tarmac, a dog will put you back on the right track...). Once you have passed the houses, take a very grassy path on the right that descends into the valley and leads to a small road. Turn right. Very quickly, turn right again onto a dirt track. You will come to a small road that leads to the hamlet of Le Pin. Turn left to reach the bottom of the valley on the D134 (signposted "Chemin du Pin").

(5) Turn left (be careful, traffic can be fast).

(6) Quite quickly, take the path that descends to the right (yellow markings). You will arrive at the first ford, which is the most difficult. It crosses the Sanne. There are no stones to cross the obstacle, it is a concrete slab. Either there is no water, or there is a little water, or there is a lot of water.

In the third case, go back up to the road and take the departmental road on the left to the Chapelle de Surieu, where you will find our route at the marker (7). In the second case, you will get your shoes wet. Your path climbs steeply. You come out onto a small road, which you take on the right.

A little further on, take another small road that descends to the right (old blue sign saying "Le Chassignol" and yellow markings). When your small road turns right into the hamlet, take the dirt track that descends opposite. It leads to the D134, which you take on the right (watch out for traffic) to enter La Chapelle-de-Surieu.

(7) At the yellow sign for "La Chapelle de Surieu" - Alt. 273m, turn left towards "Le Mouillat". Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn left again and quickly leave the road to take a stony path opposite a bend (Chemin du Sonnet - yellow markings). You will pass two more fords. Stones can help you cross (same note: if there is too much water, turn back and return to Saint-Romain by road). Your path climbs steadily for a good while.

(8) You will pass through the hamlet of Le Mouillat (equestrian centre). Ignore a road that branches off to the right at the end of the hamlet. You will come to a T-junction.

(9). Turn right (you are now on theGR®65: white/red markings and yellow scallop shells). Quite quickly, at a bend, leave the road and take a forest path on the left (multiple markings) and you will arrive at a buried water tower surrounded by a fence.

(10) Turn left, following the wire fence (you will now leave all the markings behind). You will come out onto a forest track, which you follow to the left. After a while, you will arrive near a farm, at a complex crossroads. Make a note of the path immediately to your right, as this is the one you will take to leave. For now, continue straight ahead along a farm building.

Immediately afterwards, you will come to a rest area with a water point, toilets and picnic tables. You will be glad you slipped your boules into your rucksack, as there is a magnificent boules court.

(11) More seriously, after the boules court, hidden by a hedge, there is a very interesting orientation table. Once you return to the previous crossroads, take the second path on the left (the one with no buildings on either side). Walk for a while (1 km, or about 15 minutes) and you will come to a crossroads.

(12) You will see a dark wooden cross in front of you. Turn left (you will see theGR®65markings and two yellow and blue crosses). A little further on, at the end of the field on your left, you will come to a fork. Take the right-hand path into the woods. You will still see theGR® markings. At a T-junction, turn right and you will immediately come to a small road.

(13) Turn right. Take the first path on your left (there are numerous markings). This leads to a small road which you follow downhill to the right. Further on, ignore a small road that branches off to the left and you will come to a sign for "Tour de Surieu - alt. 321m".

(14) You will descend to the left later on. For now, make a round trip to the tower, castle and church of Surieu. Turn back.

(14) Once you return to the sign, take the small road that descends on what is now your right. Very quickly, you will come to a grassy path on your left. Pass several benches and take a relatively high path with wooden railings.

(15) You are now at the Saint-Lazare Spring. Continue along the path, which winds down several bends to the road (Surieu climb). Descend on the left. Ignore a small road on your left and return to the valley to find the sports fields and your starting car park (S/E).

Notes

The walk starts and ends at the car park of the Saint-Romain-de-Surieu sports grounds. This village is located along the Rhône valley, east of Roussillon.

There are no major difficulties apart from crossing three fords. If there is water... you may get your shoes wet, and even your feet...

There are two water points along the route: at the Saint-Romain chapel and at the orientation table area (with toilets).

There are a few basic shops in Saint-Romain and at the Surieu Chapel.

Worth a visit

If the weather is clear, you will have beautiful views of the surrounding mountains: Chartreuse, Vercors, Monts d'Ardèche, Pilat. The orientation table even mentions Mont Blanc and Ventoux. I was unable to verify this.

At the start of the walk, you pass by the charming chapel of Saint-Romain.

Halfway through the walk, there is an orientation table and a site in the middle of nature (toilets, water point, picnic table, boules game).

At the end of the walk, you will pass by the tower and castle of Surieu, as well as the beautiful site of the Saint-Lazare spring.

Three fords to cross: the first has too much water, forcing you to walk 1 km along a busy road to reach point 7 (La Chapelle-de-Surieu). The other fords are no problem. Difficulties: several sunken, uphill paths are used for water runoff and are muddy. Disadvantage: about 1/3 of the route is on small tarmac roads, fortunately with no traffic. Interesting landscapes, very peaceful route, crossing beautiful forests.

A very beautiful hike with a stunning 180-degree panorama of the various mountain ranges and lovely points of interest along the entire route. I particularly loved the Saint Lazare spring at the end of the hike, which has been beautifully landscaped by an association. Thank you for sharing this route.

A very pretty hike with varied landscapes, woodlands, country lanes and panoramic views! We didn't see or hear any dogs 🐕 near point 4 😅. However, a wolf spider came to meet us during our picnic 🕷 and I've rarely got up so quickly! There were no particular difficulties with the fords today, despite the rain the day before (and thank you to the author for providing alternatives in case of difficulty). A big thank you to the author for this lovely hike full of surprises, for the great precision of the itinerary and for his humorous writing style! We were also amazed by the end of the hike. We visited the Church ⛪️ of the Carmelite Sisters, which is next to the Tower of Surieu, where, according to legend, the bones of Ismidon and his beloved 🥰 Mathilde are intertwined... We also really enjoyed the site of the St Lazare spring, which has been beautifully showcased. It's worth a look 👀! I highly recommend this hike!

A very pleasant and varied hike (a bit of tarmac at the start) that is very well described.
At point 11, there is a beautiful picnic area with a pétanque court for fans of the game.
The hike ends at the Saint Lazare fountain, a place that is a delight to contemplate!

At point 4, I confirm, there is little chance of getting lost, as the dogs will put you back on the right track.
The first part (1 to 7) is very (too) paved, even though the roads are not very busy.
The second part is much more pleasant, with the Tour de Surieu and the Saint Lazare fountain.

A pleasant and varied hike.
At point 10, there is a beautiful, well-equipped picnic area; unfortunately, there was a strong southerly wind that day.
The Saint Lazare fountain site is very pleasant and well laid out. Congratulations to the Friends of Saint Lazare association.

A lovely, peaceful walk (a bit too much tarmac, though, and a little more elevation than advertised, but no big deal).
We missed the orientation table (it's well hidden...) but the other points of interest are worth the detour.

A beautiful day for this varied route through lovely countryside with lush vegetation and panoramic views of the Alps and the Pilat Massif.
A beautiful walk through forests with fords that were almost dry on this day, lots of broom along the edge of the path and peace and quiet broken only by birdsong.
Finally, we discovered several well-appointed sites, including the orientation table, the Tour de Surieu and the descent to the Saint-Lazarre spring in a pretty green setting.
Thank you to the author for this new discovery and his perfect description. Lyly

PS: the fords had only a trickle of water
No. 3: dogs and their owners are welcome
