Assieu-Chavanay

Tenth stage of the Way of St James. This stage will take you to Chavanay on the banks of the Rhône. The final stage before the Massif Central, the route offers several alternatives between theGR® and the paths marked by the Jacquaires associations. Be sure to stay on theGR®65to avoid unnecessary detours. This may not be the most pleasant part of the route, but certain sections, such as Condrieu, are well worth a visit.

Description of the walk

(S) Start from the football ground, Rue du Stade; cross Rue des Bruyères to rejoin theGR®65heading north-west along Rue des Clursons. Before a high-voltage power line, leave the road and turn right onto theGR®422, to rejoin theGR®65a little further on.

(1) At the T-junction, continue left (you are back on theGR®65). After a right-hand bend followed by a left-hand bend, pass through the hamlet of Cuillery and continue to the T-junction near a bus shelter.

(2) Head right onto Chemin de la Montée Verte, cross the bridge over the Varrèze and then turn right at the junction with Route du Moulin to enter the village of Chessieu, arriving at a fork in the road.

(3) Turn left onto Rue des Jardins. At the stop sign (if you need supplies, turn left to the small grocery shop Chez Faby 100 m away), at the junction with the Route du Pilat, make a first turn right then left, crossing carefully, to continue along the Route de Carnaz heading north-west. It heads north and then, in a wide right-hand bend, reaches a bridge over the Suzon.

(4) Cross the bridge and continue on theGR®65, heading due north to the motocross track.

(5) Turn left and cross the bridge over the Autoroute du Soleil. Immediately after, at the Y-junction (Note: here the route does not correspond to that on the IGN map), take the left-hand lane heading west, cross the N7 and continue along the Chemin des Pétrollières, straight on towards the west until the junction with the Route de Glay, before the entrance to the village of Saint-Prim.

(6) Keep to the right of the road, continue along the village street, then take the D37 to pass in front of the church and arrive at the town hall and school.

(7) Turn right towards the cemetery via Chemin des Valottes, go under the high-voltage power line and stay on this path. At the hairpin bend, continue straight on along Chemin Berthus to the Red Cross crossroads, about ten metres after leaving Saint-Prim.

(8) Turn left, then at the Y-junction take the right-hand lane into Rue des Carrosses. Continue along this street for about 1 km until you reach the T-junction with Rue Gambetta after a right-hand bend at a cross on the right-hand side.

(9) Turn right, continue straight on along Chemin du But, cross Rue Gerbey with care, then turn left to follow the banks of the Rhône along Quai Pallaisse. After 450 m, take the stairs on the left to reach Quai du Rhône, then turn right onto Avenue de la Libération.

(10) Cross the bridge over the Rhône, then turn left into Rue des Terraux to reach the river’s right bank. Stay on the right bank and follow theGR®65to the Condrieu Sailing Club at the stop sign.

(11) Turn left along the D386, then left again onto Rue Beau Rivage to reach the banks of the Rhône and continue along the Voie Verte. Further on, it runs alongside the D1086 before veering away from it and reaching the fork in the path.

(12) Turn left to follow the path running alongside the canal. In March 2023, works are underway on the banks of the Rhône, diverting you back onto the path running alongside the canal. After the right-hand bend, you’ll reach the footbridge and the bridge on Avenue du Rhône.

(13) Leave the Rhône and continue left, crossing the red metal footbridge. Walk alongside the railway line on your right. Following theGR®65, turn right and go under the railway to reach the N86.

(14) Head right towards the bridge. Just after the bridge, turn left, take the steps on the left to enter a park and walk alongside the River Valencize for about 300 m. The path turns right and leaves the park.

(15) Continue along Rue de Valencize. At the stop sign, turn left onto Rue du Chemin Neuf. Walk past the town hall and continue to the crossroads. You can stock up on supplies at the Panier Sypa shop, and there’s a bakery further on.

(16) At the Crédit Agricole, turn left towards the car park for the tower on Rue du Chirat. Continue to the tower and head right to follow the water sports basin (E).
