The three observatories above Celles-sur-Plaine

A circular hike starting from Celles-sur-Plaine, climbing up into the forest towards the three German observatories from the First World War. La Pierre Piquée, then the Pain de Sucre, passing by the Vierge de Dialtrepoix, and ending at the highest point, the Tête du Coquin, passing by the Coquin and Riangoutte fountains. The walk is partly signposted by Tourisme de Mémoire signs.
La Pierre Piquée, with its parapets and blockhouses, just outside the site, Le Pain de Sucre with its ramparts and a beautiful view from the top of Le Coquin.

Description of the walk

Park in the Place de la Gare car park in Celles-sur-Plaine.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the church. Before the church, turn right onto Rue de L'Église, then right again onto Rue de la Tournelle, arriving at the crossroads with Rue de Novion.

(1) Turn left; at the end of the street, continue along the path that follows it. Follow the red triangle markings until you reach the crossroads of a track.

(2) Keep left for about 100 metres until you reach an X-shaped crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead, taking the path marked with a yellow disc. Join a track, turn left for a few metres, and follow the first path up to the right. You will reach Roche de la Neuvevoie.

(4) Continue left on the track to reach the Pierre Piquée crossroads.

(5) Turn right, almost 180°, to reach the Pierre Piquée site.

(6) Walk around the site, remembering to go down a little way into the forest on the various small paths to see the remains. Return to the previous crossroads.

(5) Turn right at the double yellow trestle and red disc markings. You will reach a crossroads with a cross in memory of a woodcutter.

(7) Continue on to reach the crossroads of the Vierges de Dialtrepoix.

(8) Take the left-hand track towards Pain de Sucre or Tourisme de Mémoire. Take a small path on the right until you reach the Pain de Sucre crossroads.

(9) Take the path on the left to visit the Pain de Sucre site.

(10) Return to the previous crossroads.

(9) Opposite, take the GR®533, marked with a green rectangle. Continue along this path, alternating between ascents and descents, until you reach the crossroads near the Fontaine des Bœufs.

(11) Leave the GR® here and take the path marked with a yellow ring on the left, passing in front of the Fontaine du Coquin, then coming out at the Fontaine de Riangoutte.

(12) Turn right onto the small, steep path. Pass the 14/18 ruins; after the blockhouses, you will come to a T-junction at the foot of the Tête du Coquin.

(13) Turn right and you will come to a small square and a car park.

(14) Take the path on the left to reach the summit of Tête du Coquin.

(15) Walk around the site, then return to the crossroads at the small square.

(14) Take the path marked with yellow crosses on the left and follow these markings for a long stretch, leaving the path leading to Tête du Gros Colas on your right, until you reach the Fontaine Benoît crossroads.

(16) Continue straight ahead downhill, keeping to the yellow cross markings. Walk through the Bois d'Allarmont forest to reach the D392a road at the hamlet of La Turbine.

(17) Cross it carefully and turn left. Pass in front of the Hallière sawmill, a historic monument, and continue straight ahead on the stone track. Further on, you will reach the Voie Verte.

(18) Take it opposite, continue downhill, cross the D392a again with caution, pass in front of the equestrian centre, then the Maison Forestière de Bénameix. You will then come out onto the Grande Rue.

(19) Cross it carefully and take the pavement on the left , then the first street on the right to reach the Place de la Gare car park (S/E).
