These two large modern slag heaps, part of a vast mining complex, open onto the agricultural plain of Loos-en-Gohelle. Slag heap 58, whose construction began in 1896, is tabular and triangular. Also tabular, T58A is very recent, dating from 1961.

Description of the walk

Start at Place Daniel Breton

(S/E) With your back to the secondary school, leave the square and head right towards the town hall.

(1) Cross Rue Émile Zola, take Rue Léon Degreaux opposite, then, at the end, turn right and continue straight on along a path until you reach a junction on the left.

(2) Take the path on the left, carry on straight ahead and cross Rue Voltaire. Carry on straight ahead, following the railway line.

(3) Cross Rue Émile Zola, carry on straight ahead, then take the first path on the right. At the end, turn left twice to reach a fork in the path.

(4) First turn left then right, to climb up the slag heap; turn right twice, then left; at the end, turn right.

(5) Head straight ahead to go back down; at the end, keep to the right, then take the first left and continue straight on until you reach the junction at the end.

(6) Turn right, then take the second right, then turn left twice, then keep to the right, then turn left until you reach the D165e1 road.

(7) Turn right, then cross the road and take the path on the left. Continue straight on until you reach the Y-junction, and keep left.

(8) Turn left twice, then right twice, and head straight up to the top.

(9) Take the first right, then go straight on and reach the junction on the descent, and reach the point (8).

(8) Carry on straight ahead; at the end, take the path on the right and join the D165E1. Turn left, then turn left again. At the end, first turn left then right and head towards the church. At the church, carry on in the same direction, taking the middle lane. You will then reach a roundabout.

(10) Carry on straight ahead to the next roundabout, then turn right twice, going round a school, before reaching a junction.

(11) Turn left onto a footpath, then carry on straight ahead. Cross Rue de la Martinique and carry on straight ahead.

(12) At the end of the path, on the road, turn left, pass the Esso petrol station and then keep to the right.

(13) Just after the Espace Vert Louis Aragon, turn right; after the house, turn left twice and return to the starting point by continuing straight ahead (S/E).

After a fairly gentle start on wide farm tracks, the walk becomes more challenging as you cross the Bois des Bruyères in Angres, where the paths are very wet.Next comes the climb up Lorette, ending with a double crossing of the equally damp Bois de Noulette. ROUTE CHANGED IN SEPTEMBER 2025. However, as the trail between points 19 and 20 is very difficult in wet weather, I have noted the end of the old route, from point 15, in the practical information section.
