Description of the walk

Start from Aix-Noulette church.

(S/E) With your back to the church, turn right onto the D937 towards Béthune for a good 50 m, then left onto Rue des Marronniers. Take the 1st right, Rue de Boyeffles, and immediately turn left onto this street.

(1) At the end of the tarmac, go straight ahead on a track. At the crossroads (cote 88), go straight on to the next crossroads.

(2) Turn left towards a grove. Go through the grove and come to a road.

(3) Turn right onto the D165 (Rue Roger Salengro). At the crossroads, turn slightly right and cross Rue Jean Jaurès on the right-hand side.

(4) Turn left on Chemin du Mont Breuvart, towards the Marie Curie school. At the end, keep to the uphill path opposite and enter the woods.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right. Cross a small road and continue on the opposite road towards the farm.

(6) At the crossroads after the Bois de Mont farm, turn right. Stay on this road until you reach Gouy-Servins. Turn right onto the D5.

(7) Turn left at the war memorial and follow the D57 towards Villers-au-Bois. Cross the D65 and go straight on.

(8) In Maisnil, turn left, going along the house with the low stone wall, and follow the road. At the end of the road, turn left and immediately ignore an exit on the right.

(9) At the oratory, go straight on along the Bois de Villers. At the end of the tarmac, go straight ahead on a track and cross Bois Perroy. Ignore an exit on the right, leave the wood and reach the D58.

(10) Follow the road to the left.

(11) Just before the cemetery, turn right. Stay in the same direction, south-east, for about 2km, through woods or on the edge.

(12) Before a sharp bend to the left, turn right and enter the woods. Ignore an exit on the left and you'll immediately come to a small road.

(13) Take a right-left turn to reach the former Abbaye du Mont Saint-Eloi. Opposite the school, turn left onto Rue de la Warde. Go straight on past Ferme Saint-Antoine (GR® markings).

(14) At the junction, continue straight ahead on a track (let the GR® go right).

(15) At the corner of Bois l'Abbé, turn left and immediately ignore a start on the right. Follow the GR®145 north-west until you enter Carency via Rue du Général Barbot.

(16) Turn right into Rue Jules Ferry as far as the church. Turn left into Rue Castellane, then right into Rue Gambetta and left into Rue du Moulin.

(17) Follow the GR® 127 to the right (Chemin du Vauchaux). Enter Ablain-Saint-Nazaire. Turn right into Rue d'Arras, then left into Rue des Scieurs. Cross Rue Marcel Lancino to reach Rue du Château and continue along this road.

(18) At the crossroads, go straight ahead into Chemin de la Vallée des Cences and climb up to Plateau de Lorette. Turn right for a few metres.

(19) Turn left and continue along the same axis as before. Cross the plateau, then a small downhill wood, and continue between fields.

(20) At the crossroads, turn left. Ignore the paths to the right and left, go to the right-hand corner, turn right and then left.

(21) Take the path on the right. Turn left at the fork. At the next crossroads, go straight ahead and enter Aix-Noulette via Rue du Bois. Follow this street straight ahead and continue along Rue l'Abbé. At the traffic circle, turn left to return immediately to the starting point (S/E).

Practical information

(19) If you wish to eat, you can leave the route and go to the Notre-Dame de Lorette memorial at "l'Abri des Visiteurs" (approx. 700m).
Important: on weekends, you may need to book several weeks in advance. Closed all winter.

Of course, you'll need to return to point (19) to complete this route.

Bad weather can cause difficulties, especially from (18) to reach the plateau at (19).

We hope you find this route sufficiently well-crafted and interesting.
If you like, you can take a few photos from the rest areas and post them here.

In the nearby area

(6) You can see the 300m long Bouvigny pylon.

(13) Mont Saint-Eloi Abbey: founded, according to legend, in the 7th century by Saint-Vindicien, a disciple of Saint-Eloi, the abbey reached its material and spiritual apogee in the Middle Ages. The monument that stands before you today is the western façade of the former abbey church. The two towers were originally 53 metres high and had 5 storeys. In 1915, bombing raids completely destroyed the fifth floor, reducing the overall height to 44 meters.
You can also see
The surrounding wall, visible from the road around the abbey.
The sandstone drinking trough in front of the towers.
Part of the abbey's entrance porch (on the square).
Some of the abbey's farm buildings.

You can visit the Notre-Dame de Lorette Memorial Living Museum.

A very pleasant hike, completed in 5h04, without the lunch time taken on mont saint elois, but in sport mode with good walkers. Well doable even after rainy weather. Easy for most of the way, with a few stinging climbs. Beware of a lot of hunting (two weeks after opening) fluorescent waistcoat recommended. Dog on lead. Distance as indicated.
Have a good walk!

Hello,
It is indeed a very beautiful and varied route that my friends and I really enjoyed.
We had a picnic on Mont St Eloi, in the dedicated area just opposite the abbey, about 16 km from the starting point.
Personally, using the S Health application on my phone, I measured the distance at 29.10 km.
Thank you for this great idea for a walk
Charly

Well done Yvette!
I'm delighted that you and your group enjoyed this route, which represents my native region.
I suggest "The Battle of Bouvines" and "The 3 Flanders Mountains".
Wishing you a very good day

Hello, thank you for this beautiful hike in the hills and plains of Artois that I would never have done, assuming that it would be a mining landscape, but not at all. I really enjoyed the climbs in the copses, the gentle plains and Mont Saint Elois,
There were no crowds, but it was very hot and it was the very beginning of the deconfinement at 100km We were 4 young people in their thirties and two senior citizens in their seventies The only pity was the lack of livestock, yearling horses and other sheep, but in the woods we met a couple of pheasants who delighted us.
Good evening to you Yvette

Many thanks to Stéphane for this beautiful route.
Beautiful corners, beautiful paths, places steeped in history, all in terrible conditions: rain, strong winds, mud...
Do it again in fine weather to see the different landscapes.
We just made a detour to Notre Dame de Lorette to remember...
Well done and thanks again

A major site of the 14-18 War, it is steeped in history.
The walk is superb, very hilly but very muddy (done on 21 December after a few rainy days). Some of the paths were just about passable, especially those on slopes. I'll be back in the summer.
It's a shame that the route doesn't go as far as the National Cemetery of Notre Dame de Lorette and the Anneau de la Mémoire (about 2km more than I did).
