The Seven Islands and the Pointe de Locmiquel

A circular stage of the Tour du Golfe du Morbihan (TGM), covering the Sept-Îles and Pointe de Locmiquel sites in the municipality of Baden. Please check tide times and tidal ranges before attempting the crossing to the Sept-Îles peninsula. Magnificent views of the western part of the Gulf of Morbihan: numerous islands (including Grand and Petit Huernic, Er Runio, Radenec, Grand and Petit Veïzit, Île Longue and Gavrinis), Locmariaquer, Arzon, the Rivière d’Auray and Pointe du Blair, Larmor Baden and the mouth of the Gulf. Swimming is possible in the summer months, particularly at Sept-Îles Beach. In winter, there are many birds to watch.

Description of the walk

Please note: read the ‘practical information’ section on tides to ensure a safe hike on the Sept-Îles site. The peninsula is cut off at high tide, particularly when the tidal range is high.

The Sept-Îles car park is located on the road of the same name. As it has recently been upgraded, we recommend parking there. You can also park almost anywhere along the road leading to the beach.

(S/E) Head towards the beach by following the road south-west.

(1) On the beach, if the tide allows, cross the passage leading to the peninsula to walk around it anti-clockwise. Head towards the opposite end by following the coastal path on either side. The walk around the peninsula can be completed fairly quickly if you don’t stop along the way.

(2) From the headland, return to the path and cross back over.

(1) From there, follow the GR®34 marked in red and white to the right, heading east towards Pointe de Locmiquel. The path follows the coast, except where it bypasses an oyster farm.

(3) The headland lies on the path and offers magnificent views of the Gulf of Morbihan. Shortly afterwards, the path joins the road to the headland; follow this until the markings lead back onto a path on the right. Continue to the next fork.

(4) At this point, leave the GR®34 and take the Allée de Bélaneu on the left, then turn left and right to cross the Rue de la Chapelle and join the Rue de Mane. At the end of the street, rejoin the Route des Sept-Îles, which leads back to the car park by turning left (S/E).

Notes

The Sept-Îles site is in fact a peninsula, approximately 2 km in circumference, part of the municipality of Baden. It is uninhabited. Its name comes from a corruption of the Vannetais Breton: Seniz, derived from Sec’h Iniz (‘the dry island’), has been reinterpreted over time as Seizh Iniz — ‘seven islands’ in Breton. Access is usually free, but at high tide, particularly during high tidal ranges, it is cut off. You should therefore venture onto the peninsula with caution. You can use the website https://maree.info/154 (Port of Locmariaquer) to find your way.

To our knowledge, there are no public toilets or taps for filling water bottles.
