(S) From the signpost opposite the north-eastern end of the barracks, follow the direction of La Baronne into the woods. You will soon come across the Montagne path; continue straight ahead into the woods, following the yellow arrow. Continue to the meadow.

(1) Cross this meadow heading north-east before returning to the woods until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Keep heading northeast, leave the woods, cross a meadow and arrive at the signpost at the intersection with a paved road.

(3) Turn left towards Creux-du-Van. Continue until you reach the intersection with a road closed to cars and motorbikes.

(4) Continue following the Chemin des Crêtes. Walk along a dry stone wall before crossing a cattle grid. Continue to the fork.

(5) Turn right towards Couvet. Continue along Chemin des Prés Rougemont until you reach the isolated house at the edge of the road.

(6) Continue until you reach the signpost at the entrance to a right-hand bend.

(7) Leave the Chemin des Prés Rougemont and continue left, north-east, to arrive in front of the Buvette La Baronne.

(8) Opposite, head northeast towards Cirque du Creux du Van on the path that starts to the right of the refreshment bar. Continue across the meadow on the path heading northwest until you reach a crossroads below an alpine farm.

(9) Turn right, then head north-east to continue the climb to the crossroads.

(10) Continue left, heading north-west, then at the signpost, turn right (north-east) towards the Cirque du Creux du Van. You will arrive at the Cirque du Creux du Van, a huge natural rock cirque consisting of 160-metre-high cliffs surrounding a valley floor four kilometres long and one kilometre wide.

(11) Please note: the entire vast rocky cirque is not protected by any barriers, so please be very careful. Follow the ridge path to the left, walking along a dry stone wall. Walk along the cirque to the viewpoint known as Spot Bouquetin, located about 300 m from the Restaurant Le Soliat.

(12) Continue along the dry stone wall , taking great care on the path as it approaches the edge of the cliff. Continue to the T-junction.

(13) Turn right (north-east) and continue to the start of the Sentier des Quatorze Contours trail.

(14) Follow the signs for Noiraigue to descend via the Sentier des Quatorze Contours trail. Descend carefully to arrive in front of the Buvette des Oeillons.

(15) Turn right and follow the signs for Noiraigue. Head east on the Chemin des Oeillons, which winds through the woods until you reach a fork.

(16) Take the right-hand path and continue to the signpost.

(17) Turn left, continuing towards Noiraigue. Cross the Bois Carré forest heading north-west, then after changing direction to the north-east, walk along the meadow on your right before turning north-west again and arriving at the signpost a few metres from the Chemin Vers chez Joly.

(18) On the Vers chez Joly path, turn left, pass the anti-tank barriers and continue to the place called Vers Chez Joly. At the fork, turn right and continue to the bridge over the Areuse.

(19) Continue along Rue de l'Areuse. In the right-hand bend, leave the Jura Höhenweg trail for a moment and turn left onto Rue des Courtons. Follow the signs for Creux de Van by bike. At the fork, after the Karting Indoor rental building, turn right. Stay on this road to arrive a little further on in front of the football stadium (E) where you will find a grassy car park opposite where you can set up your bivouac.

Worth a visit

(11) Creux-du-Van. The layers of limestone that form the extraordinary rocky cirque of Creux-du-Van were deposited by a primitive sea nearly 200 million years ago. The glacier, through alternating periods of freezing and thawing, and then the streams carved out this spectacular amphitheatre, a geological feature typical of the Jura mountain range.
