Les Rochats - Sainte-Croix

The goal for this second stage is to climb Chasseron. This rocky cliff offers breathtaking views of Lake Neuchâtel and, further south, Lake Geneva. You will also enjoy views of numerous Alpine peaks in the distance, rising up from the horizon.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The peaks of the Swiss Jura, from Noiraigue to Saint Cergue

Description of the walk

Introduction: Most of this hike follows the Jura Höhenweg trail. On maps, particularly OpenStreetMap (World), it is marked as the Chemin des Crêtes du Jura. At each major junction, you will find signposts with the number 5 on a green background. View this image.

(S) From the Café Restaurant Les Rochats, take the "Jura Höhenweg" trail No. 5 heading west. Walk for about 3 km until you reach a road at a bus stop.

(1) Opposite the bus stop, a signpost shows the direction to follow for the "Jura Höhenweg" No. 5. Turn left towards the south. Follow this road for about 700 m until you reach the La Combaz restaurant.

(2) Just before the restaurant, a sign indicates the direction for "Chasseron" (trail No. 5). Turn right at the car park. The trail climbs slightly through the woods. Pass Les Gillardes and come out onto a small road.

(3) Turn left and stay on Jura Höhenweg No. 5, heading south then south-west, until you reach an inverted Y-junction.

(4) Continue west, passing La Calame, La Cruchaude, Les Cernets Dessous and finally the access road to the La Grandsonnaz Dessus restaurant after crossing a road.

(5) Leave the restaurant on your right and begin the ascent of Chasseron, a cliff topped by several antennas. Continue to the Chasseron hotel. Lunch is available at the restaurant.

(6) From the hotel, several trails lead to the highest point of the Chasseron (1,607 m).

(7) Turn right, north, and enjoy a panoramic break at the edge of the cliff.

(8) Return to the hotel to rejoin Trail No. 5.

(7) Continue right along the ridge to the mountain restaurant "Les Avattes".

(9) Begin the descent towards Sainte-Croix until you see another sign indicating a change in direction.

(10) Turn left to reach a small road at two buildings.

(11) Take the path towards Sainte-Croix heading south. Head towards the centre of Sainte-Croix, continuing to follow the "Jura Höhenweg" No. 5. Pass the church (Rue du Temple) and turn onto Rue Centrale.

(12) Continue left on Rue Centrale until you reach your accommodation for the day, "Hôtel de France" (E).

Hello Sylvie and Frédéric.
Let me reassure you right away, there's no climbing on the route, the entire path is a T2 or GR in France. It's true that some sections pass over cliffs, but the edges are safe. The same applies to the previous stage, which runs partly along the Creux du Van cliffs (impressive, but not dangerous).
The route is largely inspired by the Swiss path N°5 "Chemin des Crêtes du Jura" which starts in the suburbs of Zurich and ends in Nyon on Lake Geneva.
Good hiking

Hello and thank you for posting this hike!
Question: when you talk about "climbing a cliff", what type of route do you mean? Climbing? If so, it's no way for us, alas.
Thanks for your reply sometime (we're planning a tour or loop of around 6/9 days in the Jura in September).
Good walking to you!
Sylvie and Frédéric (62 and 54)
