Le Creux du Van and the Saut de Brot

Le Creux du Van is a natural cirque located in the Swiss Jura. It was formed by the freezing and thawing action of a glacier. It is now accessible from several locations, such as from Noiraigue via the Sentier des Quatorze Contours. This hike has a significant climb over the first few kilometres. It is also possible to return via the Gorges de l’Areuse, at the Saut du Brot.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the Devins car park in Noiraigues.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right, then immediately left. Pass the houses at Vers-chez-Joly and continue to the track.

(1) Follow it towards “Cirque du Creux du Van”. Then keep right at the next fork. Continue straight on along the same track, uphill, to the Ferme des Oeillons.

(2) Turn left and continue uphill along the Sentier des Quatorze Contours. The hairpin bends are quite wide at the start, but gradually get tighter towards the end. After the fourteenth bend, you’ll reach a viewpoint overlooking the Cirque du Creux du Van.

(3) Continue along the cliff edge (be careful, it is very steep and vertiginous). Pass the entrance to the restaurant on your right and reach the highest point of the hike.

(4) Enjoy the view over the cirque valley as far as Lake Neuchâtel. You’ll reach the final viewpoint overlooking the cirque.

(5) Stay on the path until you reach a fork.

(6) Take the path on the left. This path is very stony, slippery and technical. It leads to a picnic table and a hut.

(7) Head down to the left of these, then rejoin the path on the right. Cross a track twice, then follow the path on the left until you reach a junction. Turn left, towards Fontaine Froide.

(8) Continue along the main track to Ferme Robert.

(9) Follow the road, then, at the first bend, take the path down to the left. Cross the road once, then cross it again. Take the path on the right at the bend, heading downhill. Cross the road again.

(10) Follow the path. Then keep left all the way down until you cross a track again. Continue straight ahead and do the same at the road. When you reach another track, first turn right then left, towards the Gorges de l'Areuse. Cross the road again, then follow it to the left and take a bend. Join the path that descends towards the Gorges de l'Areuse. At the crossroads overlooking the gorges, turn left and you’ll soon reach a second one.

(11) Continue to the right to explore the gorges. After a few steps, cross the river via a bridge and see the Cascade du Saut de Brot. Continue to the end of the gorges.

(12) Then return to the previous junction.

(11) Continue straight on to cross the river via a footbridge. Then follow a tarmac path that runs alongside the railway line. Continue to the level crossing.

(13) Cross the tracks and follow them to the left on the other side. Then keep left, following the tracks, towards Noiraigue. At the next level crossing, turn left twice, cross the Areuse and return to the car park (S/E).

We did this route in April. There weren’t many people about at that time of year. And the weather was perfect. Most of the climb is covered in the first 4 km. It’s a mix of tracks and paths. Take your time...
The arrival at the site is magnificent. Views over the cirque and the Alps in the distance. Make the most of it by climbing to the summit of Soliat to enjoy the view.
A technical descent. Best avoided in wet weather.
During the descent, we spotted some ibex.
Stop at the farm, which sells some excellent produce.
The Saut du Brot is also worth a visit. A very beautiful bridge in the gorges. This little detour is well worth it.

Hike taken on Saturday 18 April 2026

The site is truly magnificent and you simply must do it at least once! The view, the cliffs, the vegetation. It’s magical! The climb is relatively easy, even if it is long, so take it step by step! It’s shaded.
The big downside is that it’s crowded all the way up, and on the plateau too, due to several car parks at higher altitudes. The upside is the pleasant chats here and there with complete strangers, all in good spirits. The downside is the lack of peace and quiet when taking in the view of the cirque and during the lunch break. It’s hard to find a quiet spot with a view. I’ll have to get up earlier 😅

The descent is more technical, and as it happens, you don’t come across many people. Lots of roots and stones. The slope is quite steep. In fact, I had a very nasty fall with serious consequences, because of two iron bars sticking out of the ground on the way down. The paint had worn off and they were hidden by the vegetation.
So please be very careful!

We came across a family of ibex near the hiking trail. Not even scared lol!
The gorges are magnificent and offer a refreshing escape. But I wasn’t in any state to enjoy them.

We’ll have to do it again, but next time during the week for a quieter experience.

We did this walk starting from the station,
There are a few free places over there for a 10-hour walk.
The weather was very changeable, with wind, mist and occasional sunshine.
Obviously, in very wet weather, this walk can be very dangerous,
especially for the part at the start of the descent.
We had some excellent memories.
We didn't go to the Saut du Brot, which was the subject of our hike the previous day.
