Les Oulles du Diable from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar

A circular loop to discover the Oulles du Diable, the result of the formidable force of nature. The climb to the hamlet of Les Portes is very steep, as is the end of the descent. However, be careful of this dangerous torrent where tragic accidents regularly occur!

Please note: a few metres after the Pont du Diable, the path is closed because it has disappeared due to a landslide following bad weather. You must turn back.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the exit of the village of La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar on the edge of the D480 opposite the Les Marines campsite.

(S/E) From the car park, return to the village, staying on the main road. Pass the post office and follow the bend to the La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar signpost.

(1) Continue along the same road, cross the bridge and take the first road on the left towards the church. Pass the church and the cemetery, then take the first path on the left 50 metres further on. The path climbs steeply into the woods and then runs alongside the tree-top adventure park. It comes out onto the road at the entrance to a bend. Follow the road and 20 metres after the bend, look for the inconspicuous entrance to the path. Go back up into the woods and turn left at the next junction.
Join the road again and follow it to the left to the Portes car park; then cross the hamlet.

(2) 100 metres after the last house (thatched roof), leave the road and follow the path on the left which descends towards the stream. Continue to the pretty stone bridge. Continue straight ahead without crossing the stream and follow the left bank along the protective barriers.
Then take the stairs down, cross the footbridge and go up to the right, following the other bank for a while until you reach the crossroads.

(3) Turn left towards the chapel. Follow the path, which alternates between ascents and descents, taking care as there are no longer any protective barriers.
As you approach the village, the path slopes to the left and descends more steeply to reach the Chapelle (les Oulles) marker. Turn left in front of the house to reach a street. First turn right then left to reach the main road that crosses the village.

Turn right onto the road to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

This short route is classified as moderate due to the steep ascent and descent.
You must be very careful at the edge of the stream as tragic accidents occur regularly.

Worth a visit

The Navette Torrent has carved out its bed, forming hollows in the stone whose walls have become very smooth. The word "Oules" comes from the Latin "olla", which means "pot". In Isère, the word "Oulles" or even "Ouilles" is used, which has the same meaning, hence the different spellings.

short loop from Chapelle en Valgo to Chapelle en Valgo via Pont des Oulles.
to avoid climbing up to the hamlet of Les Portes by road, it's true that the climb through the woods is very steep but short
the spectacle of the torrent is really worth discovering & all the views on the Olan side are magnificent
thank you for the idea for this hike

A pleasant hike with beautiful views of the village of La Chapelle en Valgaudemar and the Écrins massif. The trail starts just after the church and is steep until you reach the hamlet, especially for children . Best done on dry ground.
We didn't go as far as the waterfall because dogs aren't allowed in the heart of the Écrins park. We already knew this, but it's good to point it out for anyone reading this comment.
The route from Les Oulles du Diable has changed because one of the footbridges collapsed.
You can cool your feet in the stream.

A beautiful hike continuing on to the Buffe waterfall or, for an easier option, the Buchardet waterfall.
You can easily walk to the Aups hut to meet the shepherd and his flock.

The trail is very busy only on the section along the stream; the rest of the route is not very crowded.

We finally made it to the Cabane de l'Aup and there were no difficulties. There were a few climbs here and there, but I think they were accessible to most people. Beautiful views of the peaks and glaciers.

You can picnic by the stream, taking care to remain cautious. You can then cross the stream and climb up to the abandoned hamlet of Les Portes, then on to the Buchardet waterfall and, if you feel like it, to the Aulp hut...
