Description of the walk

In La Chapelle-en-Valgaudémar, leave the RD985A and turn right onto the road towards Les Portes. After a few bends on this narrow, winding road, park in the car park.

(S/E) Walk through the hamlet.

(1) Ignore the path on the left leading down to Pont des Oules; that’s the way back. Continue along the track, passing the hamlet of Fouronnière to reach a large dirt car park.

(2) Ignore the bridge, continue to the right and, at the end, look for the path that climbs. Continue along the hillside.

(3) At the junction with the Col de la Béranne path, carry straight on, cross a footbridge, and reach a crossroads.

(4) Continue straight on, cross another footbridge, and keep climbing until you reach the Cabane de l'Aup.

(5) Descend via the same path.

(4) Turn right onto the path leading down, cross the footbridge, and head back up through the forest. Continue through the undergrowth until you cross a second footbridge and reach a forest track.

(6) Turn left onto the track and follow it to Navette.

(7) Leave the track for a moment and look out for a path on the right that climbs up to the Chapel. Then head back down, between the ruins, to rejoin the track at the Forest House, and continue down the track to the bridge.

(8) Take the path branching off to the right, without crossing the bridge. Follow this path alongside the Torrent de Navette: take care as some sections have been washed away by floods and rebuilt. Continue to the meadows, then descend to the Pont des Oules.

(9) Do not cross the bridge, but continue straight on for about a hundred metres to admire, from behind the wooden railings, the Oules du Diables. Continue to a crossroads.

(10) Leave the path that heads straight down to La Chapelle-en-Valgaudémar. Take the path on the left that crosses a footbridge, cross the Oules, and head back up to the original crossroads.

(1) Turn right and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

  • For water, there is a fountain in Navette.
  • At the Cabane de l'Aup, please respect the shepherd’s privacy.
  • You are in the Écrins National Park; please respect the regulations.
  • In Navette, please respect and take care of the ruins.

Worth a visit

  • In the hamlet of Les Portes, take the time to look at the houses, especially the thatched-roof one at the edge of the village.
  • In Fouronnière, admire the wall and the house.
  • Between (4) and (6) in the forest, note the numerous walls that bear witness to the plots of land cultivated by the inhabitants of Navette. Of course, there was no forest.
  • In Navette, take the time to visit the ruins and read the information boards.
  • (9) See the Pont des Oules.
  • Between (9) and (10), take your time and, above all, exercise great caution when viewing the potholes known locally as the Oules du Diable.

This is a very popular route, and the situation is the same pretty much everywhere this summer 2025.
For me, it's the craziest ride ever, but the route is accessible for beginner hikers (but please wear good shoes anyway )
There's an interesting little detour to an abandoned hamlet. The Oulles du Diable (Devil's Pools) are still a marvel, but be careful as part of the area has collapsed and is closed off.
We followed the shepherd's instructions and stopped before reaching him to watch him work during his lunch break.
Must be very pretty in autumn!

The hike to the shepherd's hut is good, but the best part is the Buchardet waterfall, which is truly fabulous and a great place to swim.

It's a shame, they promise a cabin, but it's not accessible. It belongs to a shepherd who isn't too keen on seeing hikers arrive...

A peaceful hike. Be careful, though, as the Aup hut is occupied by a shepherd, his flock and his sheepdogs. Once we got there, we had no choice but to turn around and head back. We ended up having our picnic further down the trail.
