Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks on Avenue Duhamel at the Recoin de Chamrousse station.

(S/E) From the car park, head east and join a path where you will find the starting sign. Follow theGR®738along the ski slopes.
Reach an intersection and continue left on theGR® to reach a pass.

(1) Climb to the left to reach the summit of the Aiguille and its orientation table, which offers a beautiful 360° panorama.

(2) Return to the pass.

(1) Descend to the left on theGR® and arrive at a new intersection.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the GR®. Further on, pass through the undergrowth.
Cross a small stream and arrive at Lac des Pourettes.

(4) From this point onwards, things get a little trickier!
Head east towards Lacs Robert, still on theGR®738.
Slopes of more than 15% are on the agenda for this short kilometre of ascent.
Be extremely careful of late snowfields (still present during my hike on 01/06/2023)
The spectacular view of the lakes and surrounding peaks comes into view.
Descend gently towards the refuge visible in the distance, still on the GR®. A few metres before the refuge, theGR® turns left. Leave it and head for the refuge.

(5) Go around the large lake on the left. Begin a slight climb before starting the descent. Be extremely careful of late snowfields, which make this section technical and difficult
Further on, you will reach a small lake and a track that you should take to the right, leading to a junction of paths at the Col de la Balme.

(6) Stay on the track to the left and, a few dozen metres further on, you will come to the very first intersection you encountered at the start.

Turn left to retrace your steps in the opposite direction and finish this fabulous hike (S/E).

This hike is rated as moderate but is still physically demanding due to the rocky terrain, both on the way there and back. It is well marked and offers a great reward at the end. I did it in the afternoon, which meant I was climbing while everyone else was descending. It's impossible to get lost with the markings and other hikers. Once I arrived, there were very few people left, which was nice. I can't say which direction is best.
One downside is the starting point, which requires you to go through the resort's steep slopes, ideal for warming up your calves and demoralising the less experienced! But hey, that's the price you pay to access this splendour.
On long days, it is possible to continue on other hikes once you are up there, notably the Grand Van.

This magnificent hike is classified as moderate, but there are some technical sections with steep slopes and rocks. You need to be fit.
However, you will feel a real sense of satisfaction once you have completed the route!
Thank you

i did this loop in June but in the opposite direction, via Lac Achard and Lacs Roberts with my dog (an 8-month-old border collie). There's a slightly technical section on the descent but nothing too difficult. It might be tricky if you have children but it's doable. Great walk

A moment's hesitation at the start of the route led us to take the path in the opposite direction to the one suggested. It took us longer than expected because the climb is steep over scree, with patches of snow (early June). Less crowded than the Achard lakes. Very beautiful scenery. A very nice walk.

Personally, I would classify this hike as difficult. There are two sections, one on the way up and one on the way down, which are far from accessible to everyone.

An extraordinary walk with beautiful and varied landscapes. We were with a dog and unfortunately we couldn't do a circular as planned in the itinerary. On the way back from the lake, the path was impossible to access with the dog. The passage looked like a landslide of large rocks, but the path went right through it. Otherwise, the site and the walk are very pleasant and it was a wonderful discovery.

We took advantage of the beautiful Indian summer we are enjoying at the beginning of November 2024 to do this hike (but in the opposite direction, as we couldn't find the trail to Lake Pourettes). The magnificent landscapes promised are indeed there, the view when you arrive at the lakes is superb, and the environment is varied (alpine pastures, forest, rocky areas). It is a very beautiful hike (and many people who frequent this route know this); however, it should be noted that although there are no longer any "late snowfields" in autumn, the first frosts have appeared, and in the shade, some parts do not thaw during the day: 3 cm of ice on the surface of Lake Pourettes! And in shady areas, the white frost had not disappeared by 3 p.m., making some passages extremely slippery. While some mention excessive sunshine in summer, this hike is therefore more recommended in the off-season, as the first frosts make some passages dangerous.

Superb hike, I'm a beginner and it was great because there are challenging moments but also easy ones, the scenery is incredible, we got to see everything (mountains, forests, rocks...) I totally recommend it! The lake is a great reward, it was magnificent!

Hello everyone,

A very good hike with beautiful scenery. The climb is a bit difficult at times, so walking poles are a big help.
On the way back, there are large rocks and a bit of easy climbing, but this is something to bear in mind if you are with children.
Late snowfields in June should also be taken into account for previous periods.

At least now we know that you can't hike the Robert Lakes in winter and that it's not a medium level of difficulty

Hello,
As the author of this hike, I would like to respond to your comment.
If you read my description carefully, I emphasise the need to be very careful of late snowfields, even though my hike took place in June.
So it is obvious that as a hiker, you have to expect that in winter the route will be even more difficult than in June, especially if you don't have the necessary equipment with you.
Visorando is not to blame, and neither am I, for that matter. Anticipation is key when hiking.
Best regards,
Mickael

Having already done this hike in summer, I wanted to do it again in winter,
but with the snow it's impossible, you can't see any paths
very frustrating and dangerous
it would be good if the Visiorando app avoided encouraging us to embark on this kind of adventure, which turned out to be dangerous as there was a high risk of avalanches today and I spent a long time looking for the off-piste route in the powder snow

A very beautiful route with breathtaking views of the lakes at the top.
The climb from Lac des Pourettes is quite steep, but still manageable without too much difficulty. On the way back, you'll cross a scree slope with a few sections that are close to rock climbing.

A very pretty route, the start is fairly easy and up to the lake, apart from a few steeper sections, it's fine and in the shade
the return is a little harder with quite a few large rocks and not always easy. You may need to carry your dog depending on the type of dog
and be careful on the descent as you may cross various paths
