The starting point is in Ens. Cross the hamlet and take the road west, which turns into a rough track but is passable by car. Park in the car park at the end.
(S/E) Start the hike by following the track and quickly turning left. Go through the barrier that protects a pedestrian crossing.
(1) After 200 m, just before the fitness trail on the left, leave the track and take the path on the right that goes uphill. Continue to Lac de la Coume (40 mins from the car park).
(2) This lake is a large marshy grassland. Go around it on the right and continue climbing straight ahead. After 15 minutes, you will reach Pic de Hountas (altitude 1,751 m).
(3) At this pass below the peak, turn right and continue climbing through the summer pastures. It is in this area that you are likely to encounter herds of cattle, horses and sheep.
Please note: there are two sheepdogs guarding the flock of sheep.
About 1½ hours after setting off, you will reach a small pass (altitude 2179 metres).
(4) Continue along the path on your left and walk at the foot of the Crête de Hitte Monte. You will pass a small shepherd's hut that blends in nicely with the landscape.
(5) The path continues far ahead of you, sloping gently downwards (lowest point at 2141 m), then climbs again. The lakes are not yet in sight. The path becomes a little unclear in this area of summer pastures, between rocks and scree. Continue straight ahead, following the various tracks as best you can.
(6) Take the path that leads to the lakes in 20 minutes. Follow the right bank of the Hitte Longue stream and reach the Consaterre lakes (altitude 2,358 m).
(7) The three lakes are close to each other. The area is quiet, peaceful and calm. Pure bliss. Allow 3½ hours from the car park to reach this little paradise.
The descent to (S/E) is via the same route, taking just under 3 hours.
