From Saint-Lary-Soulan to Ancizan

The second stage of the Ténarèze, at the bottom of the Aure valley, runs alongside the Neste river through fields. In places, the path widens, suggesting the trace of the old drovers' road, particularly near the Nourde footbridge. A peaceful route that passes through several small rural villages set on a plain ideal for resting herds before the climb to the summer pastures.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: La Ténarèze ancestrale

Description of the walk

(S) Leave from the roundabout near Saint-Bertrand Church and head towards the Neste d'Aure.

(1) Turn right to follow it along a footpath.

(2) Turn left to cross the bridge towards Vignec. Stay on the road, passing the cemetery, Saint-Jacques Church, the town hall and finally Saint-Jacques Chapel just before joining the GR®105 at a large roundabout.

(3) Turn right, walk about 50 metres, then cross carefully to follow the small road supporting the GR®105 through the fields and arrive at Vieille-Aure. Go straight on to the town hall, then turn right to cross the bridge over the Neste.

(4) At the end of the bridge, take the small road on the left that runs alongside the river.

(5) Leave the footbridge on your left, pass the water treatment plant and then the campsite, and you will reach the leisure centre. Continue to the Nourde footbridge.

(6) Cross the river via the footbridge, follow the D19 to the right for about 300 metres until you rejoin the GR®105.

(7) Leave the road and turn left onto the path overlooking the departmental road, then rejoin it further on. Follow it for about 50 metres to find the entrance to the GR® on the left: be careful, as the location is misleading because there are several starting points.

(8) Follow the GR® to the three-way junction more than 500 m further on.

(9) Descend to the right, staying on the GR®. Walk along the D929 (Route de la Vallée d'Aure), passing in front of the cemetery, then join it directly below a power line.

(10) Walk along the road very carefully as there is no usable hard shoulder, cross the village passing in front of the town hall and the church.

(11) When you reach the square with the fountain, leave the main road by turning slightly to the left. Pass in front of the fountain and take Rue des Écoles, which leads to the D929 for the last time. Follow this road for about 30 metres.

(12) Turn left onto the small road (Chemin de la Marioule) that leads to Ancizan (E).

Notes

  • The Pyrenean section will mainly be on foot, and the LIO bus line 963 from Lannemezan to Saint-Lary makes it easy to link the successive stages if you need to drop off a vehicle for your return journey before or after a day's hiking.
  • The overall route of the circuit (currently being developed) only describes the stages of our progress at this stage, without specifying accommodation or refreshment points, which can be adapted to suit your pace.
  • Each daily walking stage will be 8 to 10 km long, but can also be done by bicycle depending on the routes and difficulties encountered.
