The hamlets of La Bourges

Clinging to the slopes of the Bourges valley, on the gentlest of hillsides, the hamlets bear witness to a way of life that has vanished, traces of which remain in a landscape that is gradually closing in: beautiful buildings, meadows, fields and vineyards still tended, chestnut groves and blueberries. This is the heart of the Ardèche Hautes Cévennes.

Description of the walk

In Saint-Pierre-de-Colombier, cross the bridge over the Bourges, heading towards Juvinas and La Bastide-sur-Besorgues, and park after about 100 metres, on the left, opposite the public garden, on the former fruit market square. There is a ‘Info Rando’ sign at the start of the square.

(S/E) Return towards the bridge, cross the Bourges, turn left towards the village. Take the paved slanting street 200 metres to the right (steep climb, now tarmac), continue uphill past the church on your right, turn right to pass above the community hall (former town hall and school), then left to pass between the houses, and right again to reach the bridge at the start of the Chemin de Chanteperdrix.

(1) Cross the bridge and follow the lovely Chante-Perdrix path, which is still well-paved. At the “Les Champeaux” hiking sign, continue straight on. Climb up to Chante-Perdrix, the first small hamlet on the route.

(2) Stay at the top of the hamlet, between the chestnut trees on the left and the wall above the field on the right. At the Pruneyrolles road, head straight on and climb up to the hamlet.

(3) Do not take the first path on the right which passes in front of the houses; continue following the signposts to pass to the right between the houses and begin the climb. Continue to Paillers.

(4) Climb between the houses until you reach the road; follow it to the right for a few dozen metres, take the path on the left before the hairpin bend, and continue straight ahead at the three-way junction.

(5) When you reach the road leading up to Michelin, which you have left behind on your left, take the path almost opposite, slightly to the left, which descends and crosses the Chambouserre stream. Continue to La Valette.

(6) Follow the road briefly to cross the upper hamlet of La Valette. At the end, take the path to the left of the last house. After a steep climb, keep to the right onto a flat section, then right again down a slope to the Route du Roure.

(7) At the road, take the path straight ahead through the chestnut grove and the well-tended blueberry bushes. Continue the descent in a nearly straight line, taking care not to be led astray by agricultural access tracks.

(8) At the road, turn right and then left at the next junction. You will arrive at the Burzet bridge.

(9) Cross the bridge, take the first street on the left which climbs up the left bank of the Bourges towards the headwaters. After two hundred metres, when the street becomes a track, turn sharply right onto the path climbing towards the tower. At the crossroads after the two hairpin bends, keep left and continue straight on to the Château de Gallimard (GR®® of the Haute Cévennes d’Ardèche region).

(10) The path climbs to the left 50m after the château. Keep to the left above Coste Durante. Reach the Route du Villard opposite a small chapel.

(11) Head down the Route du Villard to the right for about a hundred metres, take the D254 briefly on the left, then rejoin the path on the right to the Col de Moucheyre.

(12) Leave theGR®® de pays and take the path furthest to the right. Cross a long stretch of wild terrain (pebbles, broom) to reach the hamlet of Célas. Take care on the descent, which is sometimes stony.

(13) Turn right after the first house to descend directly, crossing the road twice. Continue straight ahead to rejoin the road a little further down. 20m further on, rejoin the descending path on the left. Descend through the chestnut trees, cross the Ruisseau du Prat, and join the Route du Prat at a hairpin bend with a slightly steep junction.

(14) Follow the Route du Prat downhill (avoid the signposted path which leads to a very wet section). After passing through the hamlet, take the path on the right which cuts across the hairpin bend and continues straight ahead. Reach the Pont du Prat, cross it, turn left and continue along the road to the starting point. (S/E).

Notes

The hike is classified as difficult as it is somewhat long and involves a significant elevation gain, but it is accessible to anyone who is sufficiently fit. At the Prat bridge, a local path used to allow you to continue along the left bank. The local council does not appear to have decided to maintain this route, which means you must follow the road on the right bank.

Do not attempt this hike in stormy or threatening weather.

Good walking boots are essential (particularly on the descent to Célas).

Grocery shop in Saint-Pierre-de-Colombier (check opening hours).

Shops in Burzet: café-restaurant, bakery, grocery shop (check opening times).

The hamlets are inhabited; please respect the area and the residents.

Picking blueberries or gathering chestnuts may be tempting: these activities are prohibited and must be avoided. They constitute an agricultural income.

Worth a visit

Admire the superb landscapes, the old stone houses and the reminders of the agricultural past.

In Burzet, take the time to visit the Romanesque church of Saint-Bénezet and climb up to the tower for the view.

Stroll through the hamlets as the mood takes you, for example to admire Célas.

At the Prat bridge, you can take a look at the recently restored Moulin du Prat.

Saint Pierre de Colomber – Célas

Thank you, JAROSZ, for your comment.
Indeed, a site where a project has been suspended by prefectural order is surrounded by barbed wire.
The local council does not appear to have decided to maintain the local footpath that, in principle, exists there.
Although I have not lived in the municipality for five years, I will correct the description.

Kind regards, M. Bonin.

A route through the countryside, through chestnut groves, which traces the lives of the locals along stone-paved paths and magnificent paved slanting streets.
Markings are clear up to the pass at point 12, but after that it becomes harder to find your way. And the BIG DOWNSIDE: on arriving in Arsac near the Moulin du Prat, just 500 metres from the start, the path is blocked off!!!! It’s impossible to get through due to the planned construction of a basilica (with barbed wire!!) so you have to turn back in Arsac and head home via the road (not great after walking 17 km).
So the route needs to be redrawn; moreover, the town hall hasn’t updated its route either
Regards
Daniel
PS: If there’s a warning sign prohibiting access, it would be helpful for walkers to leave a comment and a photo
But apart from that
a fantastic, wild and challenging hike

It would appear that there has been a slight change to the route between Celas and Le Prat
