The Chante-Perdrix loop

This easy walk allows you, over a short distance, to discover beautiful landscapes and places that bear witness to the former rural way of life in the Ardèche: hamlets, farms, meadows, chestnut groves, terraced vineyards and a mill.

Description of the walk

When arriving in Saint-Pierre-de-Colombier from Aubenas or Burzet, cross the bridge over the Bourges (towards Juvinas) and, about fifty metres further on, park on the Place du Marché on the left.

(S/E) Return via the bridge, turn left onto Rue du Bourg until you reach the paved slanting street after crossing a stream, opposite a cross. Walk up the paved slanting street (now tarmac-surfaced), turn right at the church, and go behind the village hall (former town hall and school). Continue along Rue du Village, which curves to the right to become a wide path. You will come to the Vinson stream, which you cross via an old bridge.

(1) Take the lovely paved slanting street that climbs to Chante-Perdrix. At the Tarissoux cross (Mât Les Champeaux), continue straight on. After the chestnut grove, you’ll reach a beautiful, well-maintained meadow, from where you can see the farms of Chante-Perdrix. Continue along the path between a field on the right and the chestnut grove on the left. You will reach a three-way junction.

(2) Leave the marked path and head down to the right along a winding farm track not shown on the IGN map. Follow the bends, keeping several buildings in sight but without taking their access paths or the farm track on the left. Continue the descent until you reach the Chante-Perdrix road. Take this road on the left. At the first hairpin bend, you’ll see a beautiful terraced vineyard. Continue until you reach the D26.

(3) Take the D26 on the left to the Prat bridge (the first bridge you come to, on the right). Take care on this stretch of road. Cross the bridge over La Bourges.

(4) After the bridge, in the bend, a drovers' road (not shown on the map) heads straight ahead. Follow this for a few metres, then immediately take the path on the right, passing above the houses. Just before the Moulin du Prat, with its restored waterwheel in view, the path climbs to the left for a few metres. Ignore the wide path on the left leading to the hamlet of Le Prat; keep to the right to go round the mill at the top and then join the Chambons meadow path. Follow the river through the meadows back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

This walk presents no difficulties.

However, you must be very careful on the section of the D 26 taken after (3): initially, visibility is limited by a bend and vehicles tend to approach at speed. Further on, where visibility improves, it is possible to cross, as the right-hand verge is slightly wider.

There is currently roadworks at the end of the route. Go round it via the top or return via the road (take care, especially during the busy season) from point (3).

Worth a visit

Admire the beautiful paved slanting street up to Chante-Perdrix. From the path, there is a view of the opposite slope, notably the hamlet of Le Prat.

On arrival at Chante-Perdrix, the view of the beautiful meadow and the farm is enchanting.

In places, the chestnut groves have been well cleared.

There are some lovely terraces at the first hairpin bend in the road, with an old hut at the top left.

At the Prat mill, the recently restored waterwheel is still visible.

In summer, you can swim in the river (but be careful, as the banks are private property).

A lovely walk in the shade, away from the noise. Except for the last section, which has to be done along the road due to roadworks related to the construction of a religious complex. The detour to the bridge is well worth it, though, as the water looks stunning against the rocks.

The ongoing works at the end of the trail aren’t making the walk any easier. I found myself right in the middle of the construction site, even though it’s off-limits to the public...
A lovely walk to start the day

I took a route at the end of the morning because of the heat.
An easy route, with plenty of shade.
But be careful: after the bridge over the Bourges, the path follows the river nicely, but the final section is blocked by a new concrete wall! The town hall does indicate that the path is closed, but only at the end of the path!
In the end, I had to go through the irrigation channels and get round a barrier.
Not to be done with children!
NB: the section along the road offers a view of the irrigation canal and the animals that live there.

It was a lovely route; we decided to carry on straight ahead towards Burzet and just do a round trip of 2.5 km, with some stunning views.

Yes, unfortunately, there’s a major church construction site – it’s incomprehensible that they’re allowed to spoil the beauty and tranquillity of this lovely village to such an extent.
We ‘forced’ our way through the barriers, but we weren’t particularly proud of ourselves in the face of these ‘missionaries’, who were reluctant to let hikers through.
Eventually, this walk will no longer be possible; the route along the road is uninteresting and dangerous.
Unless you mark out a new route.....

Yes, unfortunately, for the time being you’ll have to go round the roadworks via the higher route or, at this point (3), head back along the road, which gets very busy in summer.

See here.

A lovely, pleasant walk, even in hot weather
It was only at the end that we ended up at a major church building site
but we must have missed a turn-off.
