Description of the walk

From Pontgibaud, head to Pontaumur via the D941. Parking is available at Place de la Poste.

(S/E) From the starting sign, take Venelle Amédée Chapelle. After 50 m, turn left onto Rue des Ânes, which quickly turns into a path. Go through a metal gate (chicane) and follow the Sioulet for about 2.5 km. At the intersection with a wide path, go down to the left to a footbridge over the Sioulet (Pont de Pellefort).

(1) Cross the bridge and continue along the path opposite, which winds upwards and turns into a small road.

(2) At the last house in the hamlet of Pellefort, turn left and climb back up to the plateau until you reach a T-junction.

(3) Take the road on the left to the village of Les Bouchons.

(4) At the cross, turn right and, 100 m further on, turn left.

(5) At the last house in the village, take the path on the right. Follow it and descend into the Sioulet valley.

(6) At the first house in Salmagne, take the small road on the right to join the D987 at the entrance to Pontaumur.

(7) Take it to the left, cross the Saunade and arrive at the D941.

(8) After the supermarket, turn left to cross the Sioulet, go around the town hall and, via Rue Paul Chassaing, reach Place de la Poste (S/E).

We had a great time at the start of the hike along the river and through the woods. However, be careful if you have dogs, as there are several dogs running loose in the village and they will run towards you. We have dogs and they got into a fight with some of the dogs, then at the last house before the small path, there were more dogs running loose and the owner was very unpleasant, demanding that we keep our dogs on a leash even though ours were.
It's a shame because the last 3 km were stressful rather than enjoyable.

Only the first part is very pretty, in the forest and along the river. Very pleasant.
After crossing the Sioulet, there is an endless stretch of tarmac and then a very narrow country lane with vegetation (brambles and nettles), so be careful with your legs, especially in summer when wearing shorts.

We did it on 28/01/2024 after a rainy period. We needed boots to cross two small streams that flow into the Sioulet. It's not the best time of year for this walk, as the lack of leaves reveals some rather unsightly sights. The recent gales have uprooted trees in all directions. I think it must be a lovely walk in spring, but at this time of year it's a bit dodgy, especially as hunting season is open and there seem to be wild boars around, judging by the numerous tracks.
The place must be very pretty when nature awakens. In any case, we enjoyed the absolute calm that reigns in this valley. We will return in spring to see the difference.
PS: Halfway through, we crossed large patches of snowdrops in bloom.

A very interesting short family hike along part of the Sioulet river. Easy to access and an easy route with no particular difficulties.
It's a shame there's no water in the river. Worth doing again in spring when nature comes back to life.

The first part of the walk to the Sioullet crossing is magnificent, walking through the forest alongside and overlooking the Sioullet.
From Pellefort, there is a lot of road and tarmac until you return to Pontaumur (be careful, high speed on the departmental roads).
