The Rif Gorges at Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoluy

This hike is a classic. It will first take you over modest heights offering beautiful panoramic views of the Dévoluy valley and its mountain backdrop, then through a small but nonetheless spectacular gorge, all around the pretty village of Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoly.

Description of the walk

Walk through the village from north to south, to the Tourist Office, located at the start of the road leading to Super-Dévoluy. Park in the large tarmac car park opposite the Tourist Office, just after the junction with this road.

(S/E) Return to the main street by walking up to the top of the car park. You will find yourself in front of the Éterle chalet shop: go round it on the left to take the street leading up to the hamlet of Le Pré.

(1) At the first junction, turn right and, about a hundred metres further on, turn left onto the small road that climbs. At the first junction on this road, you will see the Sainte-Anne Chapel in a row on the left; walk back and forth to see it, then continue up the hill.

(2) The tarmac road ends and leads onto a dirt and gravel track, to the right of which you can see wild plum trees.
Continue along this track, which first turns sharply right before climbing steadily up to the hamlet of Truziaud. Just after crossing a small stream, join a paved track by passing in front of a large building, then arrive in Truziaud on the Col du Noyer road.

(3) First, go and see the communal oven, the fountain and the chapel, all grouped together in front of you, then retrace your steps and turn just to the left of where you arrived, passing a small waste bin hut.
Walk up to the end of the tarmac road and, opposite the last house in the hamlet, take the rocky path that climbs to the left, crosses the same small stream as above and runs alongside the Col du Noyer road before soon joining it.

(4) Cross the road and rejoin the path on the embankment opposite. After about 500 m, the path joins a track suitable for light vehicles, which you follow parallel to the road before rejoining it.

(5) Cross over and follow the bed of the Rif stream if it is dry. Otherwise, follow the road to the left for about a hundred metres, then turn right onto the track, at the entrance to which a signpost (at a place called Le Barry – altitude 1,500 m) indicates, amongst other things, the direction of the Gorges du Rif.
A little further on, a bridge allows you to cross to the right bank of the Rif. Cross over and continue along the new track on the right bank. Ignore all the paths on the right and stay on the track overlooking the Rif.

(6) Ignore a wide track that branches off horizontally to the right, and continue downhill, keeping the Rif valley on your left. After crossing a meadow, the track climbs up opposite, passing through a wood.

(7) Leave this track and take the path that descends to the left; at its entrance, a yellow sign points towards the Rif Gorges.
Follow this path down until you reach the edge of the stream, where you’ll find a small bridge at the start of a path leading back to the village. Leave this path and continue along the right bank of the stream. You’ll soon be walking alongside a cliff on your right, dotted with numerous caves; the path is secured by wooden railings, as the stream has now cut deep into a narrow gorge on the left.

(8) Cross the bridge over the gorge, which is very deep here, at the bottom of which you can see the via ferrata equipment. Join the road leading to the village.
Cross it carefully and continue straight ahead along the small road that climbs gently, from where you will soon look down on the village. Continue along this road until you cross La Souloise, then climb up to the village’s main street (Route du Col du Noyer). Continue to the right until you reach the Tourist Office, opposite which you will find the car park (S/E).

Notes

The only essential equipment: good walking shoes for the descent along the gorge path, which is often very rocky or stony and can be slippery in wet weather.

No drinking water available, except in the village of Saint-Etienne and in the hamlet of Truziaud (fountains).

Worth a visit

The Saint-Etienne-en-Dévoluy Tourist Office is well worth a visit. It offers a wealth of information, exhibitions on the flora and fauna of the Dévoluy as well as on farming and pastoral activities, and of course plenty of information on walks and hikes in the region.

For via ferrata enthusiasts, the one at Les Étroits seems particularly interesting to me.

Just a few kilometres away, you’ll soon reach the Super-Dévoluy winter sports resort, the starting point for numerous hikes, including the climb up to the Bure plateau.

A very pleasant route, particularly towards the end, which is spectacular and shaded. Almost all of the elevation gain is at the beginning, after which it's easy going. However, as the author notes, walking sticks are very useful for the descent, with stones rolling underfoot.
There are herds with Patou dogs, but they are well enclosed and not dangerous.
Lots of large pink meadow mushrooms.
I recommend it

@User 3310920 if you only wanted to see the Rif Gorges, you could have just parked right next to them!
The walk is called "The Rif Gorges, etc." but there's more to see than that: it's a hike, so the appeal lies in the pleasure of walking and everything there is to see along the way. Enjoy your future hikes!

This route is disappointing because the Rif Gorges are at the end of the trail and only a short distance away. This place is also very popular with rock climbers.
You often find yourself parallel to the road, which you cross frequently.

We walked this circular loop in 30°C heat.
It’s not difficult at all. Lovely views all the way.

A perfect route for children who enjoy walking, but in hot weather there is little shade... Keep an eye on younger children in the gorge section – the safety barrier is sturdy but has many gaps... Beautiful views of the Dévoluy throughout the walk

Description of the perfect hike – thank you!

A lovely walk with some truly stunning views of the Dévoluy mountains. For me, the highlight is really in the middle of the route, with the passage through the very impressive Rif Gorge. There are some interesting information boards at the exit of the gorges.
