The Siagne Gorges starting from Montauroux

A very pleasant route through the Gorges de la Siagne, the river that forms the border between the Var and Alpes-Maritimes departments. On the way back, a visit to the sanctuary of remarkable oak trees will be a pleasant way to round off this route.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the Montauroux municipal stadium.

(S/E) Head north on the wide track, following the red and yellow markings of the GRP® des Villages Perchés de Haute Siagne and the red and white markings of the GR®49. You will come to a T-junction at a DFCI cistern.

(1) Leave the GR® and GRP® trails and turn right onto the yellow-marked PR® trail. Continue along a gentle slope, then begin a steeper descent along a stony path that requires careful attention. At the end of the descent, you will reach the Pont des Tuves bridge.

(2) Continue along the PR® on the right bank of the Siagne, reaching a ruined building, then a footbridge leading to Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne.

(3) Continue along the PR® and, via a very slight incline, reach the Pont du Rey bridge.

(4) Here, you will rejoin the GR® and GRP® trails. Turn left and begin a very pleasant climb to reach the top, at the junction with the D96. Follow this road for a few metres, then find the GR® junction.

(5) Turn left onto the GR®, reach the Bois du Bas Défens, then the Sanctuaire des Vieux Chênes.

(6) Cross this magnificent oak grove, then return to the initial crossroads.

(1) Turn right onto the original path to return to the car park at the Montauroux municipal stadium (S/E).

Notes

(1) The DFCI cistern, to the right of the track, is particularly well tagged, notably with a friendly anti-hunting slogan and a remarkable boar's head.

Worth a visit

(2) Pont des Tuves and (4) Pont du Rey: remarkable engineering structures connecting the villages of Montauroux, in the Var, and Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne, in the Alpes-Maritimes. These bridges span the magnificent Siagne coastal river with its emerald green colour.
Between (6) and (1): the sanctuary of remarkable oak trees.

A classic but interesting and not difficult route.
I would recommend doing it in reverse, especially if it has rained in the previous days. It's easier and less slippery. Don't hesitate to take a closer look at the Siagne, especially at the bridges. And don't miss the old wheat, oil and lime mills.
Thanks to the tracker.

A short hike along the banks of the Siagne, very pleasant on a beautiful afternoon. About 3½ hours of moderate walking with short breaks to enjoy the scenery. It was just the right length for us, as we are a very sporty couple but only occasional hikers.

This trail is quite demanding. It is classified as moderate. Be careful. We did it in fairly strong sunshine. While the first part is quite shaded and pleasant, the rest of the trail, once you climb back up from the bridge over the Siagne, is exposed to the sun. Take plenty of water with you.
As a trail runner, I really enjoyed the descent at the start, with the rocks, the elevation and the winding trail, as well as the climb back up, which was similar with the scree and the elevation gain.
The section along the Siagne is beautiful. There are several places to swim.

Just one small downside to the hike: the distance.
Every time, we're surprised by the difference between the advertised distance and what we actually do.
Here, it is given as 7.91 km. The sign at the start says 9 km, and in the end we did 9.42 km.

Not very busy, but during the week. I think it must get crowded at the weekend.
Three swims along the Siagne. The first under the Tuves bridge, the second in the middle (after a picnic), and the third at the Rey bridge, before starting the climb back up. Pure bliss.
