A walk through stunning scenery with magnificent panoramic views. It’s good preparation if you’re planning to tackle Mont Ventoux a few days later.

Description of the route

Start from Villes-sur-Auzon, car park in the village centre.

(S/E) Take Le Cours, a sort of small circular boulevard that goes round the town centre.

(1) Turn right onto the Route de Sault (Avenue J. Bernard).

(2) Turn right onto the Route des Gorges de la Nesque (Route de la Nesque – D942) and follow it for about 20 kilometres to the panoramic viewpoint.

(3) The road levels out and will soon begin a descent towards Monieux.

(4) At the entrance to Monieux, take the right-hand hairpin bend towards the lake and Méthamis (green sign for cyclists). This is the road known as Les Blaches. The road goes round the lake and then reaches a T-junction.

(5) Turn right onto the D96, which climbs through the forest. The road passes the “Le Viguier” and “La Plane” estates.

(6) At the three-way junction, continue climbing to the right onto the D5 towards Méthamis.

(7) Pass the Saint-Hubert lodge, then begin a descent of around 14km to Méthamis.

(8) At the Pont de Faraud junction, head right downhill, staying on the D5. In Méthamis, continue downhill for a few hundred metres more on the same road, which curves to the left to pass through part of the village.

(9) At a hairpin bend, leave the D5 and turn right onto the Villes-sur-Auzon road (D14).

(10) Pass through Saint-Estève and continue straight on.

(11) At the second junction, turn right onto the D942, which leads to Villes-sur-Auzon (S/E).

Done by electric mountain bike. But as the previous poster (François789) says, don’t start with the Gorges de la Nesque and Villes-sur-Auzon; instead, start at Méthamis. The climb is gentle and there isn’t much traffic, unlike the Gorges de la Nesque, which is very busy. You’ll also be able to enjoy the scenery along the Nesque at your own pace. (A popular route in summer)

Hello,

I discovered this magnificent route a long time ago, but starting from Methamis and going in the opposite direction to the one suggested. Personally, this is the direction I would recommend, so that you can tackle the main climb (14 km from Methamis to the St-Hubert farm) on a quiet road with ‘average’ surface quality, and then take the long descent on a relatively busy road towards Ville-sur-Auzon (around 20 km) but with an excellent road surface. In terms of safety, this seems better to me (our descent speed is closer to that of other vehicles) and also in terms of the scenery, especially from the viewpoint just before the start of the descent towards Ville-sur-Auzon. Purely personal opinion
