The Carança Gorges in two days

Nestled in the heart of the Eastern Pyrenees, the Carançà Gorges offer an unforgettable adventure for hiking enthusiasts. This two-day route will take you through spectacular landscapes, suspended footbridges over the rushing torrent, vertiginous cornices and dense forests. On the first day, you will climb up the gorge to the Ras de la Carança refuge, before continuing on to the Estany de Carançà for a high-altitude bivouac. The next day, you will descend via a loop route through the heights, offering breathtaking views of the valley. A total immersion in unspoilt wilderness awaits you.

Notes

  • Access
    By trainfrom JaunedepuisVillefranche-de-Conflent or from Latour-de-Carol to Thuès Carança
    By bus for €1 - line 560
    By car, follow the RN 116 towards Andorra after Villefranche de Conflent
  • Departure
    Municipal car park at the Gorges de la Carança, in Thuès-Entre-Valls. Parking is subject to a charge, at least for part of the year: €5 per day, cash payment only.

  • Itinerary

    • Day 1: Climb up the gorges via the footbridges and ledges to the Ras de la Carança refuge (approx. 4½ hours, 8.9 km). Continue to the Estany de Carançà (2,264 m) for the bivouac (elevation gain 1,565 m, allow approx. 8½ hours).

    • Day 2: Partial return via the same route to the refuge, then fork off onto the loop around the heights, offering a panoramic view of the gorges, before returning to the car park.

  • Ras de la Carançà refuge

    • Located at an altitude of 1,840 m, this refuge is open from mid-May to mid-September, with meals and breakfast available upon reservation.

    • Outside this period, part of the refuge remains open unmanned, offering 13 beds without mattresses or blankets, a common room with tables and benches, and a wood-burning stove.

  • Bivouac at Estany de Carançà

    • Bivouacking is permitted around the lake, provided that local regulations are observed: set up after 7 p.m. and dismantle before 9 a.m. The site offers an ideal setting for a night in the heart of nature, with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.

  • Recommended equipment

    • Sturdy hiking boots, suitable backpack, lightweight tent, warm sleeping bag, stove, headlamp, IGN maps or GPS, clothing suitable for the weather conditions, and enough water and food for two days.

Worth a visit

  • Bains de Saint-Thomas: located about 6 km from Fontpédrouse, these open-air thermal baths are perfect for relaxing after a hike.

  • Mantet Nature Reserve: in the refuge area, this reserve offers varied landscapes and rich wildlife, ideal for extending your adventure or changing the loop if you have already done the gorges (starting from the Mantet refuge, for example).

  • Yellow Train: this picturesque train connects Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour-de-Carol, offering an original alternative means of transport to access the region.
