Our aim: to reach the stone bridge, favouring:
- the ascent via the right bank, which seemed more technical and better suited to climbing than descending
- the descent via the left bank, which features a balcony path clinging to and/or carved into the rock face.
(S/E) Start from the paid car park at the Gorges *. Go to the very back of the car park (motorhome area), then continue along the path under the Yellow Train railway bridge. You are now at the river’s edge. The first part of this path is easy and follows the water’s edge.
(1) First footbridge, several options:
- change banks;
- head back down to the car park;
- continue along the aerial path, still on the right bank, but from here the climb becomes steeper (steps). Pass the Roc de la Foradada, the Roc de la Madriu, via the Salt del Pobre, and the Salt del Lindo. These sections are carved into the rock and wind between the main cliff face and loose boulders.
(2) After the Salt del Lindo, there are a few sections with handrails to help you cross slippery rocks where the path is less marked (for a maximum of about 4 m). Begin a long traverse along the hillside, then descend to the right towards the river and the suspension footbridge.
(3) Instead of descending towards the river, you can continue straight ahead to the Pont de Pierre: a 1-hour walk (return) via fixed footbridges and rope bridges.
- Cross the Carança via the suspension footbridge and head right, along the left bank, via the cliff-top path carved into the mountainside. Go round the hydroelectric power station building on the left, via fixed metal footbridges. Begin the return journey along the balcony path, carved into the rock and very exposed (no danger, handrail, but dizzying!). Ignore a path that climbs to the left at the first fork (elevation 999).
(4) Second junction, alternative route:
- turn right to descend into the stream bed and rejoin the path at the first footbridge.
- continue straight on via the exposed path. Arrive at the water intake building and the start of the penstock. Crossroads. End of the exposed path, start of the descent (elevation 998).
(5) Head right, downhill, towards the Yellow Train railway line.
(6) Cross the bridge over the Train Jaune railway line. Take a final footbridge over the stream and continue to the car park (S/E).
