Our objective: to reach the stone bridge, preferably by taking the climb on the right bank, which we found more technical and better suited to climbing than descending.
- the climb up the right bank, which we found more technical and easier to do going up than down
- descending via the left bank, which includes a path carved into the rock face.
(S/E) Departure from the paid car park at the gorges*. Go to the far end of the car park (camper van area) and continue along the path under the Train Jaune railway bridge. You are now at the river's edge. The first part of this path is easy and follows the riverbank.
(1) First footbridge, several options:
- change banks
- go back down to the car park;
- continue along the aerial path, still on the right bank, but from there, the climb becomes steeper (steps). Pass the Roc de la Foradada, the Roc de la Madriu, via the Salt del Pobre and the Salt del Lindo. These passages are carved into the rock and slip between the main wall and blocks of rock detached from it.
(2) After Salt del Lindo, there are a few passages with handrails to help you cross slippery rocks where the path is less marked (about 4 m maximum). Begin a long traverse along the side, then descend to the right towards the river and the suspension bridge.
(3) Instead of descending towards the river, you can continue opposite to the Pont de Pierre: 1 hour's walk (there and back) via fixed footbridges and rope bridges.
- Cross the Carança via the suspension bridge and turn right, left bank, onto the path on the side of the cliff, carved into the mountain. Go around the hydroelectric power station on the left via fixed metal footbridges. Start the return journey via the balcony path, carved into the rock and very high up (no danger, handrail, but vertiginous!). Leave a path that climbs to the left at the first fork (elevation 999).
(4) Second fork, alternative route:
- turn right to descend into the stream bed and rejoin the path at the first footbridge.
- continue straight ahead along the aerial path. You will arrive at the water intake building and the start of the penstock. Crossroads. End of the aerial path, start of the descent (elevation 998).
(5) Turn right, downhill, towards the Yellow Train railway line.
(6) Cross the bridge over the Yellow Train railway line. Take one last footbridge over the stream and continue to the car park (S/E).
