l'Herba via the Mijoux Chapel and La Seigne from Les Fourgs

An invigorating walk at an altitude of 1,000 metres, through pastures and forests with lovely landscapes typical of the Haut-Doubs. The stop at the biathlon centre (La Seigne) adds a touch of ‘discovery’ before the climb of around 2.5 km up to Mont de L’Herba.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park in front of Les Fourgs Town Hall.

(S/E) Take the path leading up towards the church, behind the town hall. Go round the church to the right to reach a fork (hiking signs) and take the path on the right towards the Chapelle Mijoux.

(1) At the end of this path, after passing through a lovely wood, follow the yellow-and-blue markings, turn right at a right angle into the pasture, then immediately left at a right angle to follow the edge of the wood, and finally turn right at a right angle onto a forest track that descends into the woods.

(2) When you reach a tarmac road, enter La Chapelle Mijoux on the left. After a quick look at the chapel, leave the main road, which descends slightly, and immediately turn left onto a tarmac path that climbs and runs alongside a farm before joining the forest.
Continue straight along this track to its end (ignore the path leading uphill to the left).

(3) There, continue straight on along the dirt track that follows this stony path, ignoring the two other dirt tracks, one going uphill to the left and the other downhill to the right.

(4) At the top, as you leave the forest, turn right at a right angle onto a path that enters the forest and quickly curves to the left. As you leave the forest, you’ll reach a road that descends slightly; follow this to the La Seigne biathlon stadium (entrance via Hôpitaux Vieux). At the crossroads by the cross, do not take the road on the left, which would take you straight back to Les Fourgs.

(5) Head towards the biathlon stadium on your left and go round it on the right to take the path on the left that runs above it and climbs steeply. At the three-way junction, take the left-hand path, which is slightly less steep than the other.

(6) At the top of this path, you’ll reach a road which you cross by heading up through the field (heading slightly to the right) to quickly reach the bend in another road. A short stop to admire the view, then follow this road as it climbs up to Mont de l'Herba, through pastures and woods (there are lovely spots for a picnic throughout the undergrowth). At the Mont de l'Herba chalet, a shelter with a bench is a welcome sight! After the chalet, continue along the road, which becomes a track, to La Grange Dernier (another shelter with a bench).

(7) Follow the yellow-blue markings straight on; they lead through a pasture to a small wood.

(8) In this wood, at the crossroads, turn left at a right angle onto a path that quickly descends towards La Bégaude. Then turn right onto the stony path leading to La Beuffarde (a short stop to read the sign, surrounded by benches, on the left of the path). After La Beuffarde, you reach a three-way junction.

::9: Take the left-hand path which climbs gently through the forest and leads to the Sapin Président. At the next junction (another shelter with tables and benches), follow the signs to the carved Sapin Président (signpost). Retrace your steps back to the junction.

(10) A little further on, turn left onto the forest track in poor condition (ruts) which climbs steeply through the forest (markedGR® Red-White). On leaving the forest, follow the Red-White markings across the pastures until you reach a path which descends at a right angle to the right towards the Chapelle du Tourillot (which can be seen on the hill)

(1) Follow this path straight on..

(12) Leave it to climb up to the left to the chapel (viewpoint over Les Fourgs). Head down the field behind the chapel to reach Les Fourgs and follow the main street on the left to the town hall car park:/A:.

Long route but of moderate difficulty.
Wide trails.
Magnificent scenery on a sunny day with a thin layer of fresh snow.

A very pleasant walk. It would have been even better if it hadn't been raining.
