The Jonier and Ferrière ridges, a circular route from the Col de l'Arzelier

A circular route mainly through woodland with magnificent panoramic views. Some sections are steep, though not precipitous.
Note: this hike begins with a 125-metre descent and ends with a 125-metre climb, but the setting is lovely and it’s a very pleasant walk.

Description of the walk

Park at the Col de l'Arzelier; parking is easy.

(S/E) From the pass, turn your back on the Deux Soeurs (the two peaks on the Vercors ridge) and take the gently sloping tarmac path to reach the “Les Anémones” sign 100 m away. Turn left towards Prélenfrey, and descend alongside a stream through the forest. At the junction with the D8b road, follow it to the left towards the hamlet of L’Arzelier, then cross it to rejoin the path towards Prélenfrey. Join the same road again further down, at a place called Le Chatelard, and cross it once more.

(1) At the “Chatelard” sign, take the steep path climbing to the right, marked in yellow and green. After a series of hairpin bends, reach the ridge.

(2) Take in the view at the highest point of the ridge and continue along it as it now descends gently.

(3) At the “Pré du Playnet” sign, do not descend to the right towards the Col de l’Arzelier (unless, perhaps, to shorten the hike), but continue along the ridge, which climbs briefly before descending for a long stretch until you reach a flat area below, at the Col de Soliet. Keep an eye out for the yellow-green markings in this flatter section.

(4) At the "Col de Soliet" sign, head towards the Col de l'Arzelier to the right (note: the direction is indicated on the back of the sign) via a lovely descent through the forest, marked with yellow-green signs. You will reach a small road.

(5) Follow this road to the right towards Col de l'Arzelier (sign) until you reach a junction.

(6) At the Pont des Runes junction (sign), head up the tarmac road to the right towards Col de l'Arzelier. The road quickly turns into a good track. You’ll reach Les Anémones, then the car park on the left (S/E).

A beautiful hike in the forest, but with a long, steep climb and a long, steep descent, with no flat sections at all. A bit tough if you're not in shape, especially after several days of rain, as it's slippery.
We were also expecting to have a beautiful view of the entire ridge, but it wasn't until we reached Pré Playnet that the view opened up.
On the other hand, it was the perfect time and place for a picnic with a magnificent 360-degree view

We completed this hike in sunny weather and summer temperatures, following the route described. On the way to point 1, we were treated to a magnificent view of the Deux Sœurs. Before reaching point 2, the climb takes place along the mountainside and is quite challenging, especially for those who suffer from vertigo. Walking poles are essential, as noted in the description. The return journey wasn’t very difficult. I mention this because some people might be put off by a climb at the end of the walk.

For those who would prefer not to start the hike with a descent, it is possible to park directly at Le Chatelard, the starting point of the hike. There is a car park by the roadside in the forest.
This route offers magnificent views of the Vercors range (Tête des Chaudières, Grande and Petite Moucherolles, the Deux Sœurs), as well as, on the opposite side, the Obiou, the Grand Ferrand, the Rousses, etc.....

A very pleasant walk, with plenty of shade in the forest almost the whole way along the route, which was really welcome given the sweltering heat. The route was very well described and clearly signposted. We only came across two other walkers – it was brilliant!
