The hillsides of the Ille in Chevaigné

This walk has a charm that lies in the many sunken paths it takes along the slopes of the Ille, west of Chevaigné.

Sometimes lined with hundred-year-old oak trees, you can enjoy the peace and quiet, the colours and nature. Sometimes with a wide view over the Ille valley, it allows you to discover the Ille and Rance canal below, the meadows and hamlets.

Very colourful in spring and autumn, shaded in summer, passable in winter: a walk for all weathers!

Description of the walk

The starting point is on the D528 road, which leaves Chevaigné in the direction of Melesse, where the road crosses the Ille and Rance Canal. Parking is available on both sides of the canal.

(S/E) Leave the bridge that crosses the canal and take the towpath southwards on the right bank. You are now on the west side of the canal, opposite the bed of the Ille. Pass the parking area and continue to the first bend in the canal on your left. A path branches off to the right just before the row of birch trees that borders the towpath a little further on.

(1) Take this path on the right. It climbs slightly through woods, still heading south. At the edge of the woods, the path turns sharply to the right and follows a sunken path uphill, heading north-west. Climb the hill, where the view then opens up. At the crossroads with the Route de Betton, continue straight ahead towards La Fricaussière.

At the hamlet, turn left at the stone wall, before the first house. Find the sunken path which, a little further on, turns right to finish climbing the hill. At the top, you will come to a crossroads with a perpendicular path.

(2) At the trail junction, turn right and head north. Follow the sunken path that leads to the D528. Cross the road and continue straight ahead, still heading north. Further on, stay on the edge of the path and leave the woods on your right.

After starting to descend, the path turns right between the fields and eventually joins a road. Continue downhill, keeping to the right on the road, to reach the stone bridge over the Ille and Rance Canal.

(3) Cross the stone bridge and continue along the road. It crosses the Ille and climbs up towards the railway line. A paved path branches off to the right along the edge of the railway line.
(2 possible variants: see below.)

(4) Turn right onto this track, which descends and takes you back to the starting point. Despite the signs, there are no restrictions on using this track.

(5) Cross the bridge over the Ille to return to the starting point at the canal bridge (S/E).

Very nice walk.
Did it with three children (aged 8, 6 and 1) in 1 hour 50 minutes.
Despite the mud, the path is passable in boots at this time of year (mid-January).

Finding the village of my childhood on a route I didn't know was surprising and astonishing.

A perfectly detailed hike. The information is extremely reliable: you'll never get lost. Well done to the editors!
You can explore the countryside by climbing up above the Ille-et-Rance canal. Coming from Rennes, you can enjoy this very peaceful and gently rolling landscape.

A very pleasant walk in the sunshine; my four-year-old's little legs trotted along with ease. Thank you!

A lovely, easy walk to explore the countryside and canal around Chevaigné.
At this time of year, you can see the canal overflowing... It's worth noting that although the paths are passable at this time of year, they are very muddy
I recommend this walk to anyone in the area (I live nearby) who wants to get some fresh air during the Covid pandemic.
I did it again yesterday and didn't see many people, but I had to clean my shoes when I got back
