Description of the walk

Start at the car park near the church and follow theGR®427southwards to cross the village of Saint-Michel-de-Chabrillanoux.

GR®427signposting: white and red.

(S/E) Pass the post office and the Place de la Fontaine, where you can admire a superb panorama (information panels recounting the history of the village). At the first crossroads, continue straight ahead on the road to Rioulara.
Pass the town hall.

(1) At the second crossroads, Rioulara mast, turn right onto the small road leading to the hamlet of Lacombe, towards Garay. Stay on this small road until you reach theGR® crossroads.

(2) Lacombe mast: turn right onto theGR® towards Garay, onto a wide track climbing through the woods, ignoring the various other tracks. When you reach the Garay mast, continue right on theGR® towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre. At the next three-way junction, climb right towards the ridges, along a winding path lined with terraces to reach the small road to Trouiller.

(3) Follow it to the left for about 600 metres. Pass the Trouiller-le-Haut pole and continue straight ahead on the road towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre. About 100 metres further on, at a crossroads, reach the Trouiller pole and leave the road to follow a path on the right towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre. This stony path initially climbs, then descends and joins a fork.

(4) Cross the path and continue straight ahead towards the hamlet of Chastelard, following the low walls and fences, heading north-west. Ignore the various paths that branch off and continue on this main signposted path, lined with box trees, until the next crossroads.

(5) Continue to the right towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre. Climb up to the hamlet via the steps. This path continues along the mountainside, crossing a stony area with a sandstone slab that can be slippery.

(6) Join the road and take it on the right. Cross the bridge and reach the hamlet of Béranger. Continue along this road towards Lanove. Cross the hamlet of Mantel (or Manlet, on the IGN map), then a little further on, the hamlet of Béranger. Pass it and, at the next crossroads, follow the road on the left (route de Béranger) for about 300 metres.

(7) Take a path on the left that descends towards the Alliandre stream. Cross it and climb up through the woods before descending into a valley. Cross another small stream and continue to the first houses of Bas-Paulou, on the left. Join the road and follow it to a hairpin bend.

(8) At this bend, turn right onto a track lined with holm oaks. Cross a stream and continue climbing.

(9) At the first bend in the track, continue straight ahead along a small path with uneven, sometimes steep terrain. Go down some steps and continue climbing until you reach the junction with the road.

(10) Lanove mast: turn right towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre and follow this small paved road to the intersection with Route du Serre.

(11) Turn right towards Lanove, then immediately left at a shed and take the track leading to the hamlet of Val.
At the entrance to the hamlet, near the cemetery, follow a path on the left that climbs up to the road. Cross it and take the track that follows theGR® trail climbing opposite through the woods to a transformer. At the next junction with the road, cross and continue straight ahead.

Yellow and white markings.

(12) Serre de Rias mast. Leave theGR® for a yellow and white signposted path that descends to the right towards Saint-Maurice d'Alliandre. The path gives way to a small road, follow it along the houses. At the next crossroads, turn left, join the RD2 and follow it to the right for about 600m. Reach the hamlet of Alliandre and cross it.

(13) At the hairpin bend, leave the D2 and take the track opposite, towards Saint-Michel-de-Chabrillanoux. This track is sometimes stony and difficult to navigate, leading to the hamlet of Combier.
Pass below a very large, distinctive house (La Maisonnette), then pay close attention to the signposts, as they become difficult to see when the grass is high and covers them.

(14) At the crossroads, turn right and cross the hamlet of Combier. At the end of the hamlet, at the Combier mast, turn right onto the small road towards the hamlet of Buis (or Bouis). At the next two crossroads, continue straight ahead and pass under the hamlet of Buis.

(15) At the next intersection, turn left between the fields and then, a little further on, turn right. The well-marked path goes around some cultivated plots. Pass a junction on your right and, at the next one, turn left onto a track entering the woods. A few dozen metres further on, the track turns right, leaving a first hilltop lake on your left.

Continue, pass over a second hilltop lake, and rejoin the road at the small hamlet of Combe Rosier. Continue straight ahead to return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

- Avoid this hike after recent rain: the ground is slippery in places and there are sandstone slabs.
- Good hiking boots are necessary, walking sticks are useful

The Chastelard and Béranger masts are broken or have disappeared to date.

In the nearby area

- Village of Saint-Michel-de-Chabrillanoux
- The Eyrieux Valley viewpoint (Saint-Michel-de-Chabrillanoux) overlooking the Eyrieux Valley: it offers an exceptional view of the valley and a unique perspective on the landscape.
This corbelled viewpoint highlights the rich landscape of central Ardèche thanks to its unique and natural vantage point, while showcasing the local resource that is chestnut wood. It is equipped with two information boards. The first is designed to be fun and accessible to all. Using trihedrals, it provides a wealth of information about the surrounding landscape and how it has evolved over the centuries. The second helps visitors to understand how the corbelled viewpoint was built on the rocky site.
- The pretty village of Chalancon: two information boards. The landscapes, panoramic views and historical heritage make Chalencon one of the most picturesque villages in the Monts d'Ardèche Natural Park.

For hiking groups, the only slight problem is that there is an uphill climb after lunch. The view is magnificent at the bottom, and there is an ideal spot for eating that is not to be missed.

Beautiful, varied and pleasant trails. No technical difficulties. From the cliff edge, beautiful view of the Eyrieux and the bridges that span it. One small downside: fly-tipping such as rotary cultivators, washing machines, etc.

Be careful at point 12, there are crazy hunters shooting towards the road and houses. I heard bullets whizzing past my ears... be careful

A very pleasant hike. Done during the week of 15 August in very hot weather. 80% of the hike was in the shade! Very pleasant. No particular difficulty staying on the route thanks to the signposting and, above all, GPS tracking on my phone. PLEASE NOTE: some paths are not accessible to everyone, with some sections being intermediate/difficult.

The lack of signposting at an intersection (between points 3 and 4) is annoying. The GPX route takes you down a path on the right that disappears into brambles, whereas the correct path is on the left. It is possible that the tracker found the right path below by taking a cleared area, but this was not the case when I passed through (giant brambles). After struggling for a while, I had to turn back to the fork and finally take the right path on the left.
I see that someone has already reported the difficulty in reaching point 4. So I see that I'm not the only one who got lost.
Other than this tricky spot, the entire route is well marked and shaded. And the view of the Eyrieux Valley is magnificent.

A beautiful hike. Lots of undergrowth that is shady, bright and fragrant in May.
Careful reading is necessary to follow the detailed description!
Thank you

A very beautiful hike in glorious sunshine, with magnificent views of the Eyrieux Valley. At this time of year, the broom is in bloom, which is very pleasant!
A little difficult to reach point 4
Otherwise, a hike to recommend

We wanted to avoid the road and went through Dussere
The turn-off after the greenhouses isn't very visible
But the owner showed us the way (follow the fence)
We got lost at Mat Combier We went through "Les Razes"
Nevertheless, we really enjoyed the easy route with its beautiful scenery
Thank you for letting us know about it

A very beautiful hike where you can see the Eyrieux Valley. It's a bit challenging, so be careful if it's wet as there are lots of stones

Shortened route by going directly from point 6 to point 12 via a wide path that gradually climbs up to Alliandre.
Please note that between points 2 and 3, there is a sharp change in direction at the Garay signpost in the forest, despite the sign indicating to "continue straight ahead". We descended to the hamlet of Garayt (road) and climbed back up to the signpost when we realised our mistake.
There are many beautiful paths, but we missed the main views of the Eyrieux by skipping the northern part of the hike.

A lovely hike, very varied with beautiful views of the Eyrieux and the Ardèche mountains. A short section along a narrow ledge may be unsettling for those who are particularly prone to vertigo.

I highly recommend this hike!
