Description of the walk

Departure from the church square in Janvry (access via the A10 or N118, exit "Les Ulis"). Parking is available in the church car park or along Rue du Marchais.

The route is fully signposted but, in open fields, there are almost no signs due to a lack of support. There are also numbered markers from the Communauté de Communes du Pays de Limours, which are referred to in the description below.

Red and yellow signposts

(S) At the point furthest from the church, take Rue du Marchais (on the right with your back to the church). Follow the moat and pass in front of the main gate of the castle. At the fork at number 9, leave the road and follow the gravel path on the left. Turn immediately right between two buildings and continue along a grassy path with a hedge on your right.

(1) Join Rue du Marchais coming from the right and turn left (north-northeast) onto a path that descends slightly between the fields.

Red and yellow + yellow markings

(2) At the T-junction (marker no. 18), turn right and walk along the edge of the Bois des Bezelles on your left.

(3) At the next junction (marker no. 17), turn left and enter the woods via a path that starts to the left of a large gate. The path winds downhill, initially between two fences. At the bottom of the descent, cross a sparse area (recently cut), a copse and then a clear forest.

(4) Cross a stream and climb up a path that quickly becomes paved. The slope becomes steeper and leads to a small road on the plateau (marker no. 16-3).

(5) Follow the road to the left. When the road turns right, note the top of the chapel on the left, which protrudes above the castle walls. You will reach the entrance gate to the Château de Saint-Jean-de-Beauregard (marker no. 16-2).

(6) Turn left (west-northwest) onto a wide path. Note the contrast between the landscapes: on the left is the castle grounds with the castle visible in the distance, on the right are cultivated fields and in the distance are the large housing estates of Les Ulis... At the end of the park boundary, continue west-northwest along a grassy path that passes between two dead trees and then curves to the right.

Yellow signposting

(7) At the three-way junction (Borne n°16-1), leave theGRP® du Hurepoix heading towards a farmhouse and turn left (west). Pass a copse and follow the grassy path that winds between the fields (the yellow signs with two sides provide good landmarks). Reach the edge of the woods and continue west with the bell tower of the church of Gometz-la-Ville clearly visible.

(8) At marker no. 16 (an old signpost in poor condition), continue a few metres towards the church and, directly below the high-voltage power line, turn left towards the water treatment plant (there are no arrows or markers here; keep the high-voltage power line on your right).

(9) Turn left onto the small road (yellow arrow) and cross a stream. Follow the road (be careful, the verge is narrow) and climb gently up to the hamlet of La Brosse.

(10) At a fork about 250 m after the sign for the hamlet, take the road on the left (Chemin de Champreau; sign for "Voie sans issue"). When the road bends to the left, continue east on Chemin de Champreau (sign) which becomes a dirt track and then a grassy track. After about 1 km between the fields, you will come to the marker No. 18 that you passed on the way in.

Red and yellow markings

(2) Turn right at a right angle and head back up towards Janvry.

(1) Take the path on the right and, at the end, turn left to rejoin Rue du Marchais. Turn right, pass the castle again and return to Place de l'Église.

Notes

Hiking boots are required. The paths between the fields can be muddy in wet weather, particularly between (2) and (4), (6) and (8) and (10) and (2).

At the start and finish, between the departure/arrival point (S/E) and the point (1), it is possible to stay on Rue du Marchais the entire way, using a path that runs roughly parallel to avoid the tarmac.

A 1:25,000 map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Hike completed by the author on 22 November 2015.

Worth a visit

In Janvry (S/E):
- Janvry Castle (17th century). The castle is used for receptions and seminars but is not open to visitors. However, you can get a very close view from Rue du Marchais (at the start of the hike).
- Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Church (17th century).
- Church square with a beautiful fountain in the centre and a beautiful farm gate on the side. From mid-November to the end of December, this charming place is unfortunately invaded by Christmas decorations that are rather garish, to say the least...

In Saint-Jean-de-Beauregard (6):
- Château de Saint-Jean-de-Beauregard (17th century). During the hike, you can only catch a glimpse of it in the distance, but the château is open to visitors on Sundays and public holidays from 15 March to 15 November. For further information or to book a visit, please visit the estate's official website.

In La Brosse (10):
- Beautiful farmhouse and houses.
- Pond and wash house (on the right-hand side of the street).

Actually, I started the walk at number 6 because I didn’t have a car. I took the RER B to Orsay-Ville.
Then a bus to Les Ulis shopping centre (Essouriau stop). At the shopping centre, opposite Carrefour, there is a tunnel (two tunnels) leading to the other side, beneath the busy roads, to Beauregard Castle.
The walk is easy to follow.

We went on this hike to see the Janvry Christmas Market. We set off from Saint Jean de Beauregard Castle, which was easier for parking
. It was a lovely walk, and the village of Janvry was magnificent with all its Christmas decorations, but it was extremely crowded... there was an endless line of cars. We didn't meet many people along the way.

A lovely walk in the fresh air, but under the planes...
It's a shame we couldn't see the Château de St Jean de Beauregard.
And parking is very difficult in Janvry.

The only downside is that you can't avoid the last part on the road, which can be tricky with a group.

Nice, except for the part along the road. It's a bit problematic for a group. I did this hike with my hiking club. Several interesting points. I also modified the return route using another nearby trail. Varied landscapes: forests, fields, castles. Pleasant in the sunshine!

To be redone on a strike day at Orly... Constant aircraft noise spoils the peace and quiet of a hike. Partly follows a road + the view of large housing estates make this an average hike. And be careful at point 9: on the left, follow the hike instructions, not the direction to Janvry!

Nice hike, only one minor drawback: about 500 metres along a relatively busy country road

A relatively easy route.
With the high temperatures of summer 2022, there were no muddy paths to worry about.
Section (4) gives your calf muscles a bit of a workout.
On section (6), the contrast between the rural landscape on the Saint Jean de Beauregard side and the urban landscape of Les Ulis is striking.
On sections (7) and (8), the path marked the boundary between mowed and unmowed fields. It was impossible to get lost.

Nice little hike, good mix of fields and woods.
No difficulty, the gradient is very steady and climbs gently.
The section on the road isn't too long.
The bench near the pond at 10 is perfect for a break.
A small note: the trees at point 6 are not dead. They're not in great shape, but they're still green.
And the llamas and other camels are still there!

An unpretentious, varied walk, mainly on dirt tracks. There is a short stretch of road that isn't very interesting, but it's only 15 minutes. Nice in winter to enjoy the sun, worth doing once or twice. We encountered a very friendly llama!

An easy and pleasant route, mostly through fields and therefore sunny (which is what we were looking for during this spell of good weather between two periods of depressing winter rain). Only 30 minutes from the ring road, which is not bad! However, there is little variety in the landscape and few places of interest (the castles are neither particularly visible nor spectacular). The church in Janvry is worth a quick visit.
To avoid retracing our steps on the last leg and to avoid the departmental road, we combined the end (from stage 10) with the first two stages of the "plains and woods in Janvry" circuit, thus completing a perfect loop in 2½ hours along small paths without rushing (but without breaks and without a camel!). Be careful, there is quite a lot of slippery mud in some places, so hiking boots are definitely not superfluous at this time of year.

We really enjoyed the hike, which was quite varied. Definitely worth doing, but be careful! The last stretch is on a very busy and dangerous road. Cars drive fast and there is very little space at the side.

an easy, pleasant hike, perfectly described, which sometimes takes place in a bucolic setting....
At the start of the Chemin de Champreau, you can even see llamas, camels and dromedaries... yes, really!
