Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the foot of the Vinade Bridge.

(S/E) Turn your back on the bridge and walk alongside the Charente (Chemin de la Flow Vélo), continuing along this path to the Saintonge lock.

(1) Take in the view of the lock and carry on along the path beside the Charente. Further on, ignore the straight path leading straight back to Bassac and continue along the river.

(2) At the end of the path, turn left towards the hamlet of Bassigeau. After crossing the Roman bridge, turn left to pass through the hamlet, following Rue de la Ferrière until you reach the junction with Route de Condé (D22).

(3) Turn left towards Bassac: be careful to keep well to the left of the road, as there is some traffic. Walk past the cemetery and, when you reach the entrance to the Abbey grounds, cross through them and enter the abbey cloister; take the covered porch of the cloister.

(4) Turn left, following the yellow and green markings (a short circular route created by the local council). Continue to the mill and head back up towards Rue Rixendis Lauriches.

(5) Turn left onto Rue Rixendis Lauriches and join Route de Vinade. Then veer left to return to the car park (S/E).

A pleasant, short, shaded route along the banks of the Charente. The sections through the village and the abbey are also lovely, with the riverside areas in the village being rather romantic.

A lovely route with a beautiful stretch along the banks of the Charente and through Bassac Abbey, as well as across the footbridges in the village. If you wish to avoid the final stretch of road, you can return via the Saintonge lock path, just as you did on the way there (the path is on the left as you leave Bassac).
