Description of the walk

Blue markings

(S/E) From the town hall car park, head towards the road and turn right (level crossing behind). Then turn left into the small street. Walk past the church and continue along the road.

(1) On reaching Les Aireaux, continue straight on through the village, cross a small stream and enjoy the view of the church at Les Graves. At the next junction, turn right to reach the banks of the Charente.

(2) Turn right along the Charente, follow this path on the left bank of the river.

(3) Pass the Juac lock. Continue along the main path for a little while longer, then leave it to take a small track to stay as close as possible to the Charente; go under the road bridge and turn right immediately afterwards to climb up onto the road. Take it to the left.

(4) At the junction of the road and a path, turn left onto this path and continue straight on through the fields for nearly a kilometre. Turn right at a right angle to reach a poplar grove; follow it along then cross over a small river.

(5) Continue straight ahead to go round the large building on your right. Take the first right, follow it to the end (white gravel) then turn right between the vineyards. After about a hundred metres, turn left onto a grassy path.

(6) Walk alongside a small wood on your left, then, when you reach the houses, join the road and follow it to the right until you reach the village of Saint-Amant-de-Graves. In the village, turn left and then keep left again to reach the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk for the whole family – I agree with the previous comments. Along the riverbank, through the vineyards, picnic tables at the church, two beautiful churches – everything you need for a great day out

A pleasant, shaded walk; a beautiful, characterful house on the banks of the Charente. A little haven of peace with a picnic table along the route.

Beautiful houses, two lovely churches, and stunning views of the river – it’s a shame we had to walk along the side of the road twice (fortunately, there wasn’t much traffic). A lovely walk, lasting 1 hour 40 minutes.
