Les Barres de Castillon via Cuges-les-Pins

The Barres de Castillon are undoubtedly the least visited hills in the vicinity of Cuges-les-Pins, yet it is here that you will find one of the finest panoramic views of the Poljé of the same name: pronounced ‘polié’, a karst depression at the bottom of which a plain forms.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Cuges Cemetery on Rue Stanislas Favre, 600 m from the town centre.

(S/E) Join the Chemin de Sainte-Catherine and head left (east) to reach the junction with the Chemin de la Roque. Turn right and walk past the sewage treatment plant.

(1) Continue along this path, which veers to the right.

(2) At the end, it turns into a track and begins to climb the hill to the right, winding through the forest.

(3) After about 1.7 km, leave the track and take a path on the right that heads south-west then south.

(4) Turn right onto a wide path and head west until you reach a wide track dominated by the cliffs of the Tête de Nige.

(5) Turn left and stay on this track, which after 1 km turns left again beneath the Barres du Castellet.

(6) At a 90° left-hand bend, take a path on the right that leads into the forest until it rejoins the track.

(7) Look out for a path on the right that climbs towards the Barres de Castillon, which you reach after 200 m. Turn left to follow the ridge, which does not strictly speaking have a clearly visible path, and enjoy the views over the Poljé. Watch out for numerous sharp limestone pavements that may hinder your progress.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to complete a circular route by continuing eastwards as numerous ‘private property’ signs dot this path – signs which did not exist last year. Continue to a ruin.

Turn back.
.
(7) After the descent, take a path opposite which starts running parallel to the track heading due east. Follow it down until you reach a wire fence on the left.

(8) Turn left then right to reach the Clos path.

(9) Look for the start of a barely visible path on the left. This path enters the forest and then becomes steep and very stony: watch out for slips. Continue along this path, which joins the Chemin de la Roque at (1)

(S/E) Follow the outward route in the opposite direction to return to the car park.

Beautiful view at the top of the bars. Not possible to follow the trail marked on the route, vegetation has grown back.

Reconnaissance carried out in May 2023, then with a group in September 2023.

Please note that at point no. 9 there is now a fence; this is private property that runs the entire length of the track.

So, we took a detour of about 2 km to avoid all the private properties along the route.

Please note: at Point 9 (turn at the large rock), a fence has been erected, so you must turn 50 metres before it and follow the fence to rejoin the path.

Hello,
The route starts and finishes in a part of the plain that seems like a paradise for horses. A pleasant walk with stunning views over the Cuges plain and the south face of La Sainte-Baume.
Please be careful when walking along the summit ridges: there are areas of sharp limestone pavement which can be treacherous, so watch your step! Thank you for this suggestion
