Vallons Dausserand and Sainte-Madeleine via the Chapel of Saint-Antoine

Most of the hike takes place on wide paths (DFCI) offering beautiful unobstructed views of the mountains and the Dausserand valley. The descents consist of fairly steep single tracks, making walking sticks particularly useful. The Saint-Antoine chapel is absolutely beautiful.

Description of the walk

Park on Chemin de Valcros, if you can find a space. It is possible to park a few streets away.

(S/E) Start the climb up the saffron field, a narrow, tarmac road. The concrete quickly gives way to a wide, slightly stony path. Very soon, you will be overlooking the town of Cuges-les-Pins. When you reach a tarmac esplanade and cistern no. 112, take the path on the left to the next intersection.

(1) Take a path on the right that climbs a little more steeply. You will soon come to a wide path. Take this path opposite, slightly to the right. You will come to another wide path. Follow it to the right, enjoying the beautiful, unobstructed and relaxing views, and continue to cistern no. 109.

(2) Turn right at marker SB208 and go around the cistern. Ignore the path that descends to the right and stay on the main path that climbs again, continuing until you reach a fork in the road.

(3) Take the path on the left that climbs up to a forest barrier.

(4) Turn right at marker SB105 and continue for a few metres, then turn left, 180°, onto the very wide path, going around cistern no. 110, which descends in a series of hairpin bends to hill 368 on the IGN map, a crossroads.

(5) Immediately after the bend, 5 to 6 metres after marker SB105, continue to the right along the path which descends, becoming narrower and steeper, until you reach a T-junction.

(6) Continue left along the path, which descends and widens, staying on the blue trail. You will arrive at a large cistern.

(7) Go around it on the left and follow the Sainte Madeleine path, marked in red and yellow (GRP® Montagne Sainte-Baume). Descend along the valley of the same name and reach the first houses, then continue to a fork in the path.

(8) Take the Chemin de Sainte Croix on the left, which climbs uphill, then take the path on the right leading up to the chapel, which you can visit on the left by making a short detour. Continue along the path, which zigzags downhill, until you reach a fork in the trail.

(9) Continue to the right and, at the gate, go down the path and take the stairs that overlook the town and lead to Rue du Dr Gastinel. Go straight on along Boulevard du Chanoine Bonifay, then turn right, then left onto Chemin de Raphele, until you reach the crossroads.

(10) Turn right onto Chemin de Valcros, marked by a red DFCI sign (S/E).
