The balconies of Minihic-sur-Rance

One of the classic walks in the Rance Basin. The path overlooks the Rance and offers numerous colourful views of the water, the riverbanks and river life. An opportunity to walk alongside the Minihic shipyards. A return via the sunken paths and the shaded valley of Saint-Buc takes us back to the Sainte-Anne Chapel, dating from 1631.

Very breezy and shaded in summer, very bright and open in early spring. High tide, low tide: you never see the same landscape.

Description of the walk

The starting point is in the centre of the village of Minihic-sur-Rance, south of Dinard.
More specifically, in the town hall car park, just behind the church.

(S/E) Walk round the town hall and head down Rue de Bon Secours, which runs eastwards between two stone walls. Then turn right at the Oratoire de la Vierge to join the coastal path at Grève des Marais.

(1) At Grève des Marais, turn left and follow the path, markedGR®®, which runs along the shore.
Pass Minihic-sur-Rance beach and continue towards Pointe du Crapaud. The path, still following the coast, then heads north towards Pointe du Ton. After this headland, it turns west and reaches the La Landriais Shipyard, where you’ll find a restored dry dock from the Le Marchand shipyard. A little further on, note the small Oratory of Notre-Dame des Terre-Neuvas.

(2) After the dry dock, continue along the beach to its northern end, where you will see a boat launch. If the tide prevents this, head left up Rue des Terre-Neuvas, then Rue Sous la Ville and Rue du Révérend Père Lebret to the La Landriais slipway. At the start of the slipway: a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, sheltered by two huge pine trees.

(3) Climb the steps to the left of the shrine and continue between the houses to rejoin the coastal path, which winds through the woodland towards the north. Pass the Pointe des Hures and gradually descend towards La Gautier beach.

(4) Once on the beach, leave the car park on your left and head up the road on the far right (be careful not to take the path that runs along the bank a little further on). Follow theGR®® markings; further on, the road turns into a sunken track that climbs southwards through the woods to join a road. TheGR®® markings end at this point.

(5) When you reach the tarmac road, turn right onto it and follow it uphill for 300 m to reach the large crossroads at La Grandais (notable for the tower of the old windmill on the right).

(6) At the crossroads, cross the D114 carefully and take the grassy path opposite under the oak trees (just to the left of the D3 road), following the yellow markings. After 100 m along the path, turn left (90°) before the first houses and head down the sunken path heading due south. Continue until you come to a road.

(7) Carry on straight ahead onto a tarmac section. After 20 m, rejoin the sunken path on the left and follow it slightly downhill, heading south.
Further on, the path runs alongside a stream, then crosses it via a footbridge, arriving at the bottom of the valley at the Carrefour du Chantier Naval du Grand Val (D114).

(8) Keep to the right of the main road and simply cross the small road coming from the right to reach a large picnic area.
Cross the picnic area in its entirety and continue until you reach a footbridge that allows you to cross a stream on the left. Immediately after the footbridge, you’ll come to a road. At this point, take the wide path that runs diagonally to the right of the road (at a 45° angle).
Continue along the path through the woodland heading south-west. Further on, after a hairpin bend to the left, the path climbs back up onto the plateau to reach a road and the houses of La Rabinais.

(9) Continue straight on until you reach a crossroads. First turn right then left and take a grassy path.
After 100 m along the path, at the first houses, head down to the left for 50 m. First turn right then left and follow a path to join the D114 at the Carrefour du Chemin de la Taupe.

(10) Cross the D114 carefully and head straight ahead. After 10 m, turn right onto the road towards Saint-Buc. Further on, at the crossroads in the village, head up to the right to the Chapelle Sainte-Anne.

(11) Go round the chapel to rejoin the D114. Follow it down to the left for 20 m, cross a stream and join a path that heads left into the woodland, heading due east.
Follow the path along the right bank of the stream until you rejoin theGR®®34Cat the first house you see on the left.
At the junction with theGR®®34C, turn left and go down the steps towards the house.

(12) Then walk along the bank of the Rance northwards to reach the Tanet Shipyard. Note a few fine old shipwrecks. Continue along the bank of the Rance north-westwards until you reach the Grand Val Shipyard junction.

(8) At the junction, take the shipyard road to the right. Cross the shipyard to an old stone arch at its eastern end. Pass to the left of the arch and climb back up to the riverside walkway to rejoin the coastal path. Continue to reach the first junction of our route with the coastal path.

(1) Head up to the left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Several sections of the coastal path may be subject to diversions in the event of flooding. In each case, clear signposts indicate the route to follow. Information: www.edf.fr/la-rance.

Paths and tracks: 10.5 km; roads: 0.9 km.
(NB: Visorando calculates 11.5 km for the route, which also matches my track. Some walkers have measured around 13 km).

Alternative route (shortcut): you can choose not to do the circular loop via La Rabinais and Saint-Buc. At the Grand Val Shipyard junction (8), cross the main road and take the Shipyard Road to reach point (1). The route is then 8.03 km.

Really nice hike. The Rance at the start and end (more like 12 km) with its tidal movements. I really want to go back. Thank you.

A NICE HIKE, ESPECIALLY ALONG THE GR TRAIL BY THE RANCE RIVER WITH ITS EMERALD SEA 🤩
THE OTHER HALF OF THE ROUTE IS MADE UP OF A FEW ROADS AND BEAUTIFUL PATHS.

THREE-QUARTERS OF THIS HIKE IS IN THE SHADE OF TREES 😃, WHICH IS VERY PLEASANT IN SUMMER.
THE DISTANCE MEASURED WITH STRAVA IS 12.5 KM WITH AN ELEVATION GAIN OF 220 M.

A route with beautiful views of the Rance and plenty of shade (which was welcome as it was quite hot that day).
We completed it in 3½ hours (including a few stops to admire the scenery).

Hello,
I only did the first circular section of the route from Le Minihic and continued on to Langrolay sur Rance.
Apart from the very busy road to the tower, the route is very good, with beautiful paths leading to Le Minihic.
So we'll be doing the hike with my club; we have a bus.
Thank you for sharing!

A very pleasant route that allows you to explore a large part of the Rance. At point 5, to get to point 6, you need to take the main road for about 500 metres until you see the mill tower... that's where we got confused... we got back on track at point 7 after asking a local for directions.
Otherwise, there are splendid views and a varied route.

Thank you for the information about Les Balcons de la Rance. Actually, I wanted to suggest that you remove the Suliac Nord hike so that hikers don't get confused. Reading below, I see from your message that I must have made a mistake and posted my message on Le Minihic. It was indeed Suliac Nord. Thank you anyway.
Best regards.
Daniel

Hello, Daniel,
Sorry, but Pointe Garel is on the St-Suliac side, not Le Minihic/Rance: there must be a mistake somewhere.
Kind regards, Yves.

Passage prohibited due to risk of cliff collapse. From the outset, a slightly further departure point from Pointe Garel is also prohibited. However, it appears to be in use.

I'm glad you enjoyed the route.
Regarding the length of the route, the value shown in the technical data sheet is a value that I cannot change, as it is calculated by Visorando's mapping software based on the route described and IGN map data. Usually, this value corresponds to the actual terrain. No doubt not all GPS devices give identical values.
Enjoy your walks.

Beautiful route but error in the distance: 13.5 km and not 11.45 km as stated in the description: to be corrected.
Kind regards, Yves.
