Circular via Pointe du Puits and Clos de la Croix in Saint-Suliac.

Saint-Suliac, a former fishing village, is located a stone's throw from Saint-Malo. The landscapes are varied, and this walk will allow you to discover the maritime side of Saint-Suliac and the narrow streets of the old part of the village. The steep side of the shore along the Rance is somewhat reminiscent of the GR®34 between Saint-Malo and Cancale, all things considered. There is a beautiful view of the Rance from the Pointe du Puits.

Description of the walk

Start from the street called Les Cours, a stone's throw from the municipal campsite. Easy to find a spot out of season.

(S/E) Head towards the Rance river until you reach Chemin de la Vierge de Grainfolet, which is on the right. Follow the path to reach the Oratoire de Grainfolet. There is a beautiful view of the Rance river, Le Minihic-sur-Rance on the opposite bank, and the Chateaubriand and Saint-Hubert bridges to the south.

(1) Take the path heading north, leaving the one that runs closest to the ocean. Follow the road you come to and turn left at the first crossroads. Continue for about 600 metres to reach the banks of the Rance at Pointe de Garel.

(2) If the tide and the dam allow (maximum water height approx. 4.5 m), walk along the shore to the right for 50 m before finding a path on the right. Climb the steps and turn left. Continue to Pointe du Puits, then beyond. The original path is now closed due to landslides, so follow the new route.

(3) When you reach the road, turn left and follow it to the buildings. Shortly afterwards, the road becomes a path along the shore, which may be a little wet and heavy going. Follow the shore to the entrance to the undergrowth.

(4) Keep left at the water treatment plant and walk along the ponds on your left. The path runs below the fields on the right, emerges from the undergrowth and turns right to go around the Moulin du Tertre mill. You can see the Beauchet or Boschet tide mill at the end of the bridge connecting Saint-Suliac to the "mainland". Follow the D117 towards the village.

(5) At the bus stop on the left, cross at the pedestrian crossing and turn left onto the road called Chemin du Gué Morin, which turns into a dirt track after about a hundred metres. The path then turns right and climbs slightly, ending at the D7.

(6) Turn left and follow the road for about 100 metres, then take the path on the right that leads into the woods. Shortly afterwards, the path climbs quite steeply after a right-hand bend and ends at a housing estate on Rue du Champ Orain.

(7) Turn right to go down this street, pass the first crossroads, and continue for about 40 metres. Then turn left onto the lane called Ruette Guiton, which is accessible on foot or by bicycle.

(8) When you reach the Maison des Collections on your right, turn left for a few metres, then right onto Ruet Dom Jean. Turn right immediately when you see the church to follow Rue de la Grande Cohue, and continue straight ahead to the church. Continue, turn right at the crossroads, staying on the same street, and join Rue du Pavé at Place du Carouge.

(9) Go down to the left to Rue de l'Hôpital. Turn right onto it, heading towards the Oratoire de Grainfollet, staying on Rue de l'Hôpital, which soon becomes Chemin de Cohignac. Continue straight ahead to reach the car park (S/E).

The woodland path after crossing the D7 can be very wet, muddy and slippery.

Worth a visit

The church of Saint-Suliac, built at the end of the 13th century, has retained its original exterior appearance. However, the interior was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century. The sacristy has retained its 17th-century appearance.
The Moulin du Tertre mill is not open to visitors as it is on private land.
The Moulin de Beauchet or Boschet is not open to visitors (yet). Renovation work is planned if funding can be found.
La Dent de Gargantua: theMenhir de Chablé or Dent de Gargantua is a standing stone made of white quartz, approximately 5 metres high. Today, it is one of the only visible remains of prehistory in the village.
The Virgin of Grainfolet: overlookingthe village, the Oratory of the Virgin of Grainfolet bears witness to the history of the Terre-Neuvas, the sailors who set out to fish for cod on the banks of Newfoundland. Built at the end of the 19th century.
