Access:
- From Annecy: head towards Sillingy, then Frangy. At Frangy, head towards Saint-Julien, then after a few kilometres turn left towards Chaumont. Park near the church.
- From Gex: follow signs for Bellegarde until you reach Collonges. At Collonges, follow signs for Saint-Julien en Genevois on the left at the second roundabout. After the Carnot bridge, go up to Vulbens and turn right towards Marlioz (D7). After Savigny, take the D47 towards Chaumont. After Les Chavannes, turn right towards Chaumont centre. Park near the church.
(S) At the village church, take the road that climbs up in front of you towards "Sommet du Vuache".
(1) After a few metres, you will quickly reach an intersection (after a barrier marking the entrance to the mountain pasture). Continue straight ahead, still heading towards "Sommet du Vuache", leaving the path on your right. The trail continues through a forest of beech and oak trees. After 40 minutes, you will arrive at the entrance to the mountain pasture (electric pole on the left). Continue forward to enjoy the view.
(2) You will arrive at a place called Sur la Montagne (this is where you will take a different path for the return journey). Continue straight ahead across the mountain pasture.
(3) The path continues along the ridge, turning slightly to the left (ignore the path opposite that descends towards Cortagy).
(4) After a few hundred metres and a quick hairpin bend, you will arrive at a magnificent viewpoint over Lake Geneva, Mont Blanc, La Tournette, La Chambotte and the Retord plateau. The path continues towards the summit. After about twenty minutes' walk through the forest, you will arrive at a viewpoint overlooking the Rhône valley and Le Retord... The summit is very close.
(5) Unimpressive and in the middle of the forest, the summit is marked by a tumulus (1,101 metres), but you're there!
The return trail follows the same route to the place called Sur la Montagne.
(2) Take the path that descends to the right. Don't miss the entrance to the forest, which is almost directly in front of you. Follow the path that winds down through the forest. After a 45-minute descent (which can be slippery), you will emerge from the forest into a field that you must cross (there is a charming little chalet on the right).
(6) You will arrive at a crossroads near the hamlet of Vovray. Leave the hamlet on your right and turn left towards Chaumont. Follow a forest track.
(7) When you reach a junction with a road, continue straight ahead downhill. Cross the hamlet of Chaumontet, leaving a private road on your right, then turn left at the cemetery (Chaumont is in sight). Take the road that descends to the left and becomes a carriageway. After 200 metres, at the hamlet of Les Voieries, turn left onto a road that climbs back up towards Chaumont.
