Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park at Chaumont Church.

(S/E) Cross the Route de Saint-Jean and take Rue des Écoliers (towards Chez Margoët). A few dozen metres further on, turn left down the slope onto the Way of St James.

(1) At the junction at the hamlet of Chez Margoët, turn left towards Rocher Bataillard. Stay on the main path and carry on straight ahead at every junction.

(2) At Rocher Bataillard, turn left towards the hamlet of Les Roches. A few minutes later, turn left onto Route de Savigny (D47). Walk carefully along the road. 500 m further on, at the crossroads, leave the road and turn left onto the dirt track.

(3) Turn right after the house (towards Les Roches). After passing through a wooded area, cross the D147 carefully and continue straight on up the hill. At the junction (Les Roches), turn sharply left onto the path that leads into the woods (towards Le Mont). Please note: this path is quite narrow and can be slippery, so take care on this section. At the top of the climb through the forest, you’ll reach a more open area of mountain pasture; stay on the main signposted path.

(4) At a place called Le Mont, turn left down the hill towards Chaumont (church). Once back in Chaumont, first turn left then right to return to your starting point (S/E).

There is a small car park at the Auberge du Pralet as well as at Chaumont Church.
There is also a water point at the start.

Additional information: visit the ruins of Chaumont Castle.
Head towards the Auberge du Pralet. At the signpost for Chaumont (church), turn left towards Château de Chaumont (ruins). It takes 5 minutes to get there, but it’s well worth a look!

Worth a visit

The ruins of Chaumont Castle are one of the highlights not to be missed on this walk.
Geological features (sharp limestone pavement, ‘rocher bataillard’…) and historical sites can be explored on this family-friendly and accessible walk.

A short walk around Chaumont with a brief detour along the roadside. A pleasant option if you are short on time, with a lovely stretch through the woods!

Early December, with no snow, but with limited visibility due to fog.
It was impossible to take in the surrounding mountains, but the atmosphere was reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.
A short, leisurely walk that must be rounded off with a climb up to the castle ruins overlooking the surrounding area.
One to do again in fine weather!
