Le Voyemont and the Roche des Fées viewpoint via the Hang shelter

A mix of magnificent cow pastures and beautiful coniferous forests with stunning views. A preserved valley with a few farms and the occasional holiday home, at the foot of one of the valley’s legendary peaks, the Climont (966 m). A haven of peace, picture-perfect!
The route is suitable for beginner hikers, though the climb to the Refuge du Hang and then to the Belvédère de la Roche des Fées may seem challenging for those less accustomed to hiking and requires a reasonable level of fitness.

Description of the walk

Car park (altitude 686 m) located beside the D214 departmental road (space for approx. 4–5 cars).
Coming from the Col de la Salcée, heading towards Le Climont, it is located roughly halfway between these two destinations, more precisely between elevations 660 and 682 (see IGN map). If you can see the buildings of the “Source du Climont”, you have already gone too far...

(S/E) Cross the road carefully and take the forest track, marked with a Blue Ring, which climbs up opposite.

(1) After about 400 m, turn right, still following the Blue Ring markings. Continue south-west along the marked path for about 1.3 km.

(2) At a junction, continue to the right on the path marked with a Yellow Triangle, Yellow Rectangle and Blue Cross. Pass the buildings of Ferme Caroline, then those of the Chalet on the left. Then let the Yellow Rectangle path branch off to the right and immediately lead to a new junction (elevation 615).

(3) Continue straight ahead following the Yellow Triangle markings (ignore the Blue Cross markings branching off to the right). Note the stunning views, particularly towards the valley.

(4) At the next junction (antenna), turn left onto the path marked with a Red Saltire.

(5) Pass the Ferme Auberge du Nouveau Chemin on your right. Continue along the path marked with a Red Saltire. You’ll come out onto the Route forestière du Hang; follow it to the right for about a hundred metres. Then take a path on the left, still marked with a Red Saltire. Ignore all the turnings to the right.

(6) At the end of the path, turn left (Red Saltire) and pass the Ferme de l'Abatteux on your left. The path takes a sharp bend to the right and leads to a junction.

(7) Continue north-north-west, following the Blue Diamond, Red Triangle and Red Ring markings. At a fork, turn left and climb steeply.

(8) At the junction, continue straight ahead along the same marked path and keep climbing.

(9) Pass the Hang shelter and continue the climb to reach the viewpoint (superb panorama; take care if children are present).

(10) Turn around and head back down to the Hang shelter.

(9) Continue the descent down the northern slope.

(8) Turn left onto the path marked with a Red Triangle. Reach a junction with the Chemin carrossable du Heissat, about 800 metres further on.

(11) Turn sharply left and follow the Chemin du Heissat (marked with a Yellow Diamond and Red Saltire). Stay on the main path and ignore a few side tracks.

(12) At the crossroads (elevation 627), take the path marked with a Yellow Diamond and Red-White-Red Rectangle diagonally to the left. At the next junction, turn right following the Yellow Diamond and Red-White-Red Rectangle markings. Stay on the marked path, heading east then north-east, and ignore all side paths.

(13) At the junction at elevation 605, go straight on. Then ignore a path coming from the right and reach a new junction near elevation 659.

(14) Then turn left and follow the forest path marked with a Yellow Diamond, Blue Cross and Blue Ring. Pass the Source de la Bruche, with its sculpture by the side of the path, and arrive at a junction already taken on the way out.

(2) Take the second path on the right, marked with a Blue Ring. Follow this path, which you took in the opposite direction on the way there, and reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike completed in May 2021, in around 6 hours, with a good stop for lunch at the Abri du Hang.

The Abri du Hang (9) is a lovely spot, open but sheltered, with a table for 8 people and 2 benches; there is also a spring just below.

The final section of the climb to Voyemont, then to the Belvédère (10), is quite steep; good walking boots and poles are recommended.

For the exposed sections, partly under the trees, in fine weather, a hat may be necessary.

There are no shops along the route, so bring your own food.

Ferme Auberge du Nouveau Chemin (5). Table d’hôte meals reserved for guests. Enquiries: 06 18 93 76 03.

Worth a visit

This walk, with some lovely views, goes round the summit of Climont without climbing it. There are plenty of walks (which do climb it) available on the Visorando website.

A lovely walk around Climont with some stunning views. The Roche des Fées viewpoint offers a superb 360° view of the surrounding valleys. One slight downside is the return journey, which is made difficult by forestry machinery between L’Abatteux and the junction with the path taken on the way there, as previously mentioned.

My concern is as follows
The recorded distances and elevation gains do not always match the actual figures, and this applies to all the hikes
Kind regards

A lovely walk around Le Climont, taking in the Vallon du Hang. Between L'Abatteux and the track leading to the junction with the path taken on the way there, the route is difficult, as the paths have been rutted by forestry machinery.

A lovely walk, but it was very windy and cold that day. Still, it’s one to do again in the spring, for the beautiful scenery

The red saltire markings are outdated and should be renewed by the Salles branch of the Club Vosgien. We met two hikers who also struggled to complete the route. It’s a shame; the hiking route and the scenery are magnificent, with lovely unobstructed views.

A lovely walk through the Vosges countryside of the Bruche Valley
open countryside with the occasional farm, lovely view of the Rocher des Fées,
then mainly through woodland.
In some places, we had to check that we were on the right track.
A pleasant walk.
