Park in the car park next to the small pond at the Col de Steige.
(S/E) Cross the road and take the path on the other side, marked with a blue rectangle. It passes behind a wooden building, which is actually a huge apiary. Turn right, then left about a hundred metres further on.
(1) The path climbs gently through the woods and joins a wide forest track.
(2) Follow it for about 100 metres, then leave it for a path climbing south-west towards Le Climont, marked with a blue rectangle.
(3) When you reach the forest track, turn right and continue to follow the blue rectangle.
(4) After about 400 metres, you will arrive at the source of the Climontaine. From there, the path, still marked with blue rectangles, veers south then south-east to the D214.
(5) When you reach the D214, continue along the road, still following the blue rectangle. You will pass successively to the left of the road in front of a holiday camp, the Ferme-auberge des Cimes and an agricultural shed until you reach the junction with the D156. This first part will have been an excellent approach walk and a necessary warm-up for the second part.
(6) At the D214/D156 crossroads, the Yellow Cross marked trail starts on the right, at a 90° angle, towards Le Climont, and begins to tackle the contour lines. It continues to the summit where the Julius Tower is located. You will cross and take a section of a wider forest path, but the markings to follow (Croix Jaune) are always clearly indicated and you will quickly find the small path that climbs to your right.
(7) When you reach the tower, built in 1897 by the Strasbourg section of the Club Vosgien, make one last effort to climb to the top to enjoy the panoramic view. The descent from Climont is still on the marked Yellow Cross trail. It starts opposite the tower exit, slightly to the right.
While the ascent was through the forest, the descent is much more open and you will have a beautiful view of the Col de Steige and the hamlet of La Salcée, where you will find the Confitures du Climont shop. The Yellow Cross markings are present throughout the descent.
Please note that this descent is quite technical and can be difficult in bad weather.
If in doubt, return via the same route you took on the way up.
At the bottom of the descent, you will join the circular path marked with the Blue Ring.
(8) When you reach the crossroads, follow the Anneau Bleu trail heading east. You will come to the D214.
(9) Once on the D214, take the marked Disque Rouge trail on the left, which will quickly take you to the trail you took on the way there, marked with the Rectangle Bleu, at the source of the Climontaine.
(4) Join the route you took on the way there.
(3) Don't forget to turn left at the start of the wide forest track. If you miss it, don't worry, as this path rejoins the original route, still downhill, a little further down at point (2).
(2) Now that you've completed a circular journey, all you have to do is descend the track to the Steige pass after crossing the D50 (S/E).
