Circular route between Ranrupt and Colroy-La-Roche

A circular walk starting from Ranrupt, taking us towards Stampoumont as far as Colroy-la-Roche, returning via Fonrupt.
A route alternating between open countryside and woodland, with two viewpoints overlooking the villages.
The first half is fairly gentle, the second half a little more challenging, with the Climont massif in view.

Description of the walk

Start in Ranrupt at the town hall car park, to the right of the church.

(S/E) Walk back down to the small square in front of the church (bus stop), and take Rue Principale on the left (Blue Triangle signpost – towards Chemin des stations). Then follow Rue du Hagis uphill to the right.

(1) At the foot of the Ranrupt National Necropolis (see information panel), turn right to start the Chemin des stations.

(2) Visit the viewing point, which offers a beautiful view of Ranrupt. Continue along the main signposted path.

(3) You’ll reach a hillock as you leave the forest; turn left to head down towards the hamlet of Stampoumont. At the crossroads at a place called Les Vieux Prés, continue straight ahead to the crossroads in front of the Stampoumont Chapel.

(4) Turn left; at the fork, ignore the road on the left and head down towards Bourg-Bruche (Blue Triangle markings), then climb back up via the Chemin de l'Alhant.

(5) At the junction, at the top of the Chemin de l'Alhant, head right (Yellow Cross markings – towards Saint-Blaise-la-Roche). Follow the flat forest path of the Alhant.
At two successive three-way junctions, keep to the right to stay on the marked path.

(6) When you reach a junction with a shelter, turn right (Yellow Triangle signpost, towards Colroy-la-Roche). The path turns 90° to the left then bends to the right. Continue for about 200 m.

(7) After a reservoir, take a downhill path to the left, then first turn right then left and follow the marked path to reach thefirst houses of Colroy-la-Roche and the road.

(8) Take the road on the right, cross a bridge and head towards the church via the Route des Charasses. After a bridge, turn right and follow the river along the Rue des Pêcheurs. After a left-hand bend, you’ll reach the Grand Rue junction (D424).

(9) Cross the D424 with care and continue straight ahead towards La Cheneaudière. Pass the Town Hall on your right, then a fountain, and continue along Rue du Ban de la Roche. Leave the village, ignore the bridge on the left and arrive at a three-way junction.

(10) At the three-way junction, continue straight ahead on the main path (ignore the Chemin des Grandes Haies on the left). There is a sharp bend where the path continues to the right. Continue for about 500 m to a crossroads near a viewpoint.

(11) Climb up to the viewing platform to enjoy a beautiful view of Colroy-la-Roche.
Continue past the drinking water reservoir. At a three-way junction, take the path on the right (marked with a Yellow Ring).

(12) After a flat section (fence with fir trees), leave the markings and head straight up to the right. You will reach a forest track.

(13) Turn right for a few metres, then follow a path to the left up a fairly steep slope. Cross a path forthe first time and continue uphill straight ahead. You’ll reach asecond path; turn left onto a slight incline.

(14) Before a small clearing with a bench, take thefirst path on the right downhill (Blue Triangle markings). Beautiful view of the Climont; continue downhill to the hamlet of Fonrupt. Cross through Fonrupt to the crossroads by a wooden house with large bay windows and a boundary wall of large stones.

(15) Follow the path opposite (do not go down the road turning to the right), then at a stone cross, head right along a dirt track (marked with a Blue Triangle). Further on, at a bend, go down to the right.

(16) You’ll arrive on the heights of Ranrupt, at a road with a stone wayside shrine. Turn left and head downhill to reach Rue de l’Église. Turn right towards the church and the town hall car park (S/E).

A lovely, leisurely walk through a variety of woodland.
We also started the route in Colroy La Roche, parking next to the town hall.
A few points to note:
point 13: the climb is steep, but it’s relatively short.
point 14: superb view of the Climont, surrounded by flowering broom that smells wonderful. At the entrance to the hamlet of Fonrupt,
there’s a llama farm...
point 16: a visit to the church (very large for such a small village) in Ranrupt reveals fragments of the area’s history.
The route from point 5 to point 6 is certainly beautiful but a bit long...

A lovely, fairly easy walk that’s very interesting thanks to the variety of landscapes and forests. It was nice to start with a Way of the Cross right in the heart of the forest. We had lunch near the Charasses refuge, which is open in case of rain, but as it was sunny, we had a picnic. We didn’t see any other walkers, just some deer. Highly recommended!

A lovely, easy walk, mostly through woodland. The view of Le Climont at the end of the route is stunning. There are a few picture-postcard views along this truly delightful walk.

A pleasant walk, alternating between forest and open glades, with some lovely views of the surrounding area (villages and the Climont)
Coming from STRASBOURG, we did the circular route starting and finishing at Colroy-la-Roche (car park next to the town hall); as a result, we started with the most challenging section
I ticked ‘yes’ for footfall, as we came across about ten couples and two groups. But it was the first Sunday after lockdown restrictions were lifted (no mileage limits => COVID), and also the only day of really fine weather for quite some time...
