Description of the walk

In Saint-Victor-la-Rivière, park below the D5, in front of the town hall.
Please note! This hike is not marked in its entirety.

(S/E) Go back up the D5 and cross it. Climb up towards the church. Go around it on the left and walk along the cemetery on your right. At the crossroads with a cross, continue on the road to the left.
At the fork, turn left towards Les Hameaux (yellow signs). At the next fork, keep left and follow the signs for La Croix. At the crossroads with a small cross, continue straight ahead towards Pré de Font. Ignore the path on the right further on.

(1) Immediately afterwards, turn right towards Les Prés. Pass through the undergrowth. Cross the Ruisseau de Malvoissière stream via a footbridge at a left-hand bend in the path. Continue uphill through the undergrowth. At the edge of the woods, take a sharp right-hand turn. (Further on, in the left-hand bend, the path marked on the map that goes straight ahead does not exist.)

(2) Join a path at a bend and continue straight ahead. Ignore a path on the right. At the next intersection, turn right towards Le Verdier.

(3) On the road at the entrance to the hamlet, continue straight ahead in the direction of a signpost. Between a beautiful thatched cottage and an electrical transformer, turn right and ignore the path on the right. At a signpost, ignore a path on the right (the layout differs from the map at this point). Cross the Ruisseau de Malvoissière stream again and head uphill.

(4) At the crossroads, turn left towards La Grande Allée. At the next intersection, turn left (signpost). The path turns right.

(5) Just after a signpost, ignore a path on the left. At the crossroads, turn left onto Grande Allée towards Buron du Verdier. Cross the road and continue straight ahead.

(6) You will come to theGR®30(red and white markings) and turn right towards Les Prés de la Forêt. Cross a path at the signpost. You will soon come to another path after a left turn and continue to the right (signpost).

(7) Cross the Courbanges stream via a bridge. On the road, continue straight ahead at the signpost.

(8) On the left side of the hamlet of Courbanges, take the second path on the left towards the Cascades du Cheix. At the directional signs (on either side of the stream), cross the stream to the right. On the other side, follow the road to the right. At the intersection, walk a few metres along the road to the left and look for a path on the right. Follow it downhill for a few metres to discover the Cascade du Cheix waterfall.

(9) Go back up the road, reach the crossroads on the left and continue left towards Courbanges. At the intersection (note the information sign about Courbanges), continue straight ahead towards La Bruyère de Saint-Victor, leaving the GR®. At the fork just after, at a fountain, continue straight ahead.

(10) At a fork with a path, turn left to leave the hamlet (yellow disc markings). Cross the Courbanges stream again and pass a stone cross.

(11) Further on, take a path on the left towards Gouzainde. The path approaches the Courbanges stream and then runs more or less alongside it. Cross a few tributary streams.

(12) At the intersection, turn left towards Pic Chauvet. Shortly afterwards, turn right towards Jassat. The path passes a spring catchment and then runs alongside the stream that flows from it.

(13) In the hamlet of Jassat, you will come to a dry fountain and turn right towards L'Argelier. Shortly afterwards, in the left-hand bend, take the path on the right. Further on, ignore the path on the left that leads to Château de Murol.

(14) Turn right and ignore the path that branches off to the left. (Further on, the path that branches off to the left on the map does not exist in reality.) Further up, you will pass a stone cross, the Croix de Pradiaux.

(15) Further on, at the crossroads with a small stone cross, turn right to return to the cemetery of Saint-Victor-la-Rivière. Return to the town hall car park (S/E) by retracing your steps.

Notes

Moderately difficult hike, standard hiking equipment required.

Directions at crossroads are given by yellow signs. When I mention just "directional sign", it refers to a sign with no indication of location (cross-country skiing).

Wide paths, some of which are rocky. Numerous passages through undergrowth.

Worth a visit

Contrary to what its name might suggest, no river crosses the commune of Saint-Victor-la-Rivière. The most likely explanation is that it is a distortion of the Auvergne word "ribeyre", which refers to a marshy wetland, as found in several valleys in the commune, particularly in Jassat, on the route of this hike.

Perched on a basalt rock, the main part of Saint-Victor Church dates back to the12th century.

Numerous streams criss-cross the high volcanic plateau, also known as a planèze. The Malvoissière stream is a tributary of the Couze Pavin, and the Courbanges stream flows into the Planchette stream, a tributary of the Couze Chambon. Downstream from the waterfall, the Cheix stream becomes the Planchette stream, which joins the Coubanges stream upstream from Jassat.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Great hike through diverse landscapes. Extraordinary woodlands and high points with magnificent views. Relaxing and soothing, you'll walk to the extraordinary sound of birdsong, far from the crowds of some other hikes in the region... I only came across three or four other hikers on the entire trail. I loved it. Thank you for sharing 👌🫶

Lovely walk on varied terrain. Very quiet (perhaps because of the season?). Just a moment's hesitation in a hamlet, but everything else was perfect.

A very quiet hike. The start is a bit long (and exposed to the sun) but the rest is pleasant with beautiful panoramic views. There is a lovely waterfall in Courbanges, shaded and cool, ideal for eating your sandwich on a hot day.

Great hike
The paths through the woods are very pleasant. The area is peaceful and not very busy. It's a relaxing hike that offers different views of our beautiful hills and superb panoramas. Worth doing again in the right direction (we started backwards this time to avoid the big climb at the end of the route)

We did this lovely hike under beautiful sunshine in early October, and the shaded sections were very welcome. However, once we reached the plateau, we were treated to a magnificent view: Le Sancy, various Puys between the Col de la Croix Morand and Col de Saint Robert, part of the Chaudefourd Valley and the Puy de Dôme...
After a picnic in a meadow, we headed towards Courbanges. At 10 o'clock, we didn't follow the route but took the GR 30 (Chemin des Quayres) which is located at the entrance to the village (well worth a visit, with a drinking fountain).
We followed the GR 30 to Jassat, where we rejoined the route in 13.
A very nice hike.

Hiking mostly in the woods.
Ideal in warm weather.
Until 18 September 2023, you can continue on to the mirror hut!

Hike done in a group of eight people starting from the Courbanges lodge. We did the route in reverse, starting with the Cheix waterfall and climbing the GR 30 towards Besse. The title of the hike could be "the tour of the hamlets of the commune of St Victor". At Jassat, we rejoined the GR 30 and had the good fortune and pleasure of climbing the "wall" in the forest and arriving directly at the lodge after 2 km. Beautiful, vast landscapes.

A pleasant hike with my girlfriend.

The route was fairly well marked, even though we strayed a little from the path before crossing the stream at (7)
.
Up to Courbange, you can enjoy a beautiful, unobstructed view, then after that, the hike consists of forest trails punctuated by crossings through hamlets.

Be warned, after Jassat, the last kilometre is all uphill.

A short hike to do on hot days, as there are many sections in the woods and near waterways.

Very pleasant and not difficult at all.

The map is very accurate
