The Cademène Valley

In Gaulish, ‘Rurey’ refers to a place rich in springs and streams. From its beautiful circular fountain in the centre of the village, passing by the foot of the church and in front of the elegant wash house, you will climb the botanical trail and descend into the Val de Cademène with its beautiful unobstructed views over the Loue Valley and the Jura Mountains. After passing through a somewhat wild stretch of woodland, you’ll reach the viewpoint overlooking the valley, dominated by the watchful sentinel of the thousand-year-old keep of Castel Saint-Denis.

Description of the walk

Park in the centre of Rurey, on Rue du Bourbat, next to the old weighbridge. No signposting.

(S/E) After taking a look at the beautiful old fountain, walk up Rue du Bourbat and turn left into Grande Rue after the war memorial. You’ll pass a new fountain and head right, towards the Botanical Trail. At the foot of the church, there’s a superb wash house. Head up to the left along the stony path that passes beneath the old vicarage.

(1) A little further up, at a wooden gate, the path forks. Continue uphill to the left, skirting the pastures.

(2) At the second gate, cross the small stony track and continue along the path (mountain bike route) opposite, which soon branches off. Keep left onto the mountain bike route. When it begins to descend, you’ll soon come to a fork; stay on the well-defined track on the right.

(3) When the path veers sharply to the right, leave it to cross a barbed-wire fence on the left via the metal mountain bike gate. You’ll reach the pastures above the village with lovely views over the valley. Further down, at the gate, you’ll find a passage (somewhat hidden in the undergrowth) on the left leading to Rue du Mont, which you follow down to the right.

(4) Turn right at the next junction, onto Rue de la Vallée. Then head up the dead-end road (Rue des Vignes) on the right, passing an old trough. The street becomes a lovely stony track, offering views over the Loue valley and Mont Poupet. When the stony track ends, continue straight on along the forest path which begins to climb.

(5) A small stream (possibly dry) crosses the track (marked on the IGN map). A hundred metres further on, leave this relatively wide track and head up to the right onto the path that climbs the wooded hillside. Just as it begins to descend, at a scree slope, turn 90° and head up to the far left into a gully.

(6) At the top, near a small boundary stone, there is a fork. Continue straight up the slope. About fifty metres further up, at an old stone boundary marker, the path turns left, winding around a tree and the marker. Two hundred metres further on, at another marker, look for the ONF sign no. 33 on the right-hand side of the path and head right along this lovely straight track until you reach the gravel road.

(7) Head right to a hunting car park. Take the path descending to the right (directly opposite the ‘Parking de chasse’ sign, forest sign 31). You’ll reach a track at a broken marker. Turn left, staying on this track which runs along the slope on your right until you reach the viewpoint.

(8) You arrive at the viewpoint overlooking the Loue valley. To the right, the Rocher de Colonne; in the centre, the keep of Castel Saint-Denis; at its feet, the Ravin de Valbois Nature Reserve; and in the distance, the Roche de Hautepierre bathed in sunlight.

(2) You will soon come to the second barrier and return to the village on the left via the same path (S/E).

A lovely walk that takes us through the Val de Cademène, passing through the Rurey Botanical Garden. We’ve had the same comments time and again about the ONF sign no. 33 being hard to find, and at point 7, the ‘hunting car park’ sign has gone missing. The route is, however, easy to follow thanks to the GPS track. No difficulties; the countryside was lush and green in early May, and there’s a superb viewpoint to finish with. Thanks to Tonnoguh for sharing this route.

We went on this hike, which was simply magnificent, on Wednesday 19 April 2023.
It’s classified as easy, but with our friends we would have rated it as moderate, as there were some fairly steep climbs.
If I hadn’t had the GPS, we would have had some difficulty following the route.
Point 3: after crossing the mountain bike track at the end of the field, we came straight out onto a village street which we turned right down, etc. We didn’t spot the path hidden away in the undergrowth.
Point 5: there were several small streams crossing the path (due to the weather), so we didn’t immediately find the path on the right that climbs the wooded hillside.
Point 6: we didn’t see the ONF sign number 33; we turned right onto this lovely straight track at sign 32.
At Point 7, we took the path on the right opposite signpost 31 as recommended, but we turned back because the GPS was directing us to continue along the road; a hundred metres further on, we turned right past a pile of wood onto a path which this time did indeed lead us to the superb viewpoint.
I hope these few constructive comments will help other walkers to enjoy this lovely hike overlooking the Loue Valley, etc...

A lovely walk through the woods on this hot day – plenty of variety – and no trouble finding my way thanks to the app on my phone, as the ‘hunting car park’ sign has gone missing… At point 3, the path is now completely clear.

Hello,

And I find it difficult to concentrate on the route description when I’m with someone else.

In this particular case, it’s useful to use the Visorando GPS app as well as the route description and map.

See you soon

I ran into some difficulties:
-point no. 3: couldn’t find the hidden passage in the undergrowth.
- I was unsure about the route at points 6 and 7.
But my opinion isn’t very representative; for point 3, we walked all the way round the pastures without success.
As for stages 6 and 7, I think I didn’t follow the planned route exactly. I wanted to do this trail reconnaissance with a companion; I usually go on my own. And I realise that I find it difficult to concentrate on the route description when I’m with someone else.
Next time I’ll go on my own, or with someone who focuses on the route description as much as I do.
In any case, I’d like to thank the members of Visorando for providing this service. I find it very useful.
Kind regards. Marie
