The Rurey viewpoint

In the Gallic language, ‘Rurey’ refers to a place rich in springs and streams. You will therefore set off from the beautiful circular fountain in the centre of the village, passing, at the foot of the church, in front of the elegant early 20th-century wash house built of cut stone and covered by a curious double hipped roof. You will then climb the botanical trail to a superb viewpoint over the Loue valley, overlooked by the watchful sentinel of the thousand-year-old keep of Castel Saint-Denis.

Description of the walk

Park in the centre of Rurey, in the car park on the left after the beautiful fountain (coming from Épeugney). No signposting.

(S/E) Return towards the fountain, turn right onto Grande Rue, passing the old weighbridge and immediately left after the war memorial. Pass a new fountain and head right, towards the Botanical Trail.

(1) At the foot of the church, there is a superb wash house. Head up to the left along the stony path that passes beneath the former vicarage.

(2) A little further up, at a wooden gate, the path forks. Continue climbing to the left, following the pastures. At the second gate, cross the small stony road and continue along the path (MTB route 21) opposite, which soon branches off. Head up to the right, crossing the pine forest. You’ll reach the viewpoint overlooking the Loue valley, the keep of Castel Saint-Denis and the Jura mountains.

(3) At the picnic table, two paths branch off; take the one on the left which runs alongside the small rocky outcrop. Be careful, as the stones can cause you to trip. From this point, follow the description carefully, as there will be no further signposting to guide you. You’ll be accompanied all the way by the scent of boxwood, typical of the limestone hills of our region. Stay on this path running along the ledge, ignoring the tracks coming from the right. You won’t go astray if you follow this path, which never strays more than ten metres from the rocky edge.

(4) In a small valley, your path meets a track running down the hillside at a right angle. Follow it uphill to the right for about a hundred metres. Swinging round a tree and an upright stone, the path turns left. Two hundred metres further on, at a new boundary marker, look for the ONF sign no. 33 on the right-hand side of the path and head right along this lovely straight stretch until you reach the stony track, which you cross, continuing along the path opposite which becomes steep and slippery.

(5) At the small road, head down to the right towards the church.

(1) At the wash house, turn left into Rue de l’Église, then right into Rue du Bourbat to return to the car park (S/E).

At this time of year, halfway along the route, the woods were being felled and the timber lay across the path.
As for the signpost at Les Sommières, you need to look carefully on both sides to follow the route description.
I should point out that, following the moth infestation, the box trees are now bare, offering a lovely view of the valley.
We enjoyed it.

A lovely walk, but some of the signposting is incorrect; we couldn’t find mountain bike route no. 21, and the ONF sign no. 33 wasn’t visible either. I wouldn’t describe this walk as ‘easy’ because the final section is a long, steep descent that’s quite dangerous.

Thank you for this lovely walk, which was both short and packed with highlights: a fascinating botanical trail, a magnificent viewpoint, a splendid and peaceful forest... A real treat!
It’s worth noting, in my view, that there’s a slight discrepancy between the description and the map. When we reached point 4, the description says to go up to the right, whereas the map shows going round the slope to the left: we took the latter option, and I think we went down too far because afterwards we had to climb back up a slippery, steep slope (the one I think tinabreve is referring to). In fact, we should have followed the description and gone up to the right (as mentioned by natureetrando). But never mind, no big deal; we found the path again very quickly and, overall, a big thank you to tonnoguh for suggesting this route.

Please note: when you reach the valley where the path along the ridge ends, you do indeed need to head up the slope to the right, but forestry work has significantly altered the landscape… As you continue up the valley, you’ll come to a junction; this is where you should turn left and follow the path for 200 metres. Once you reach signpost 33, turn right, but there is no direct path; you’ll come to another path which you follow to the right to reach the stone path indicated.

The long stretch after the picnic tables (with a superb view) along the cliff edge isn’t exactly easy. Suitable for those used to walking.
When you reach the white path, you can follow it to the left instead of going straight down. This allows you to make a gentle return.

A lovely walk, all in the shade. Not recommended for young children due to a very narrow and steep section. And the end is tricky (very slippery and steep)
