Parking is available on the D135 towards Lizine, after the confluence of the Loue and Lison rivers, 100 metres on the right after the bridge over the Lison. Yellow-red and yellow-blue signposts.
(S/E) From the car park, take the marked gravel path uphill, ignoring the path that descends into the field towards the river. Continue to the next signpost.
(1) Descend towards the Lison on the right, along a beautiful gravel path (towards Source du Lison), then continue south along the river. You will arrive in front of the ruins of the Moulin Sapin.
(2) A footpath leads you to a small beach by the river. Return to the path and continue to the right. You will arrive at a meadow with two signposts, one on the right and one on the left.
(3) Leave the stony path and climb the Lizine hillside via the forest path on the left. Follow a low mossy stone wall and pass another signpost (towards Source du Lison). Ignore the path on the right to finally arrive at Lizine. Head towards the town hall and turn right into Rue de Simolière, which runs alongside the church.
(4) Push open the gate to the cemetery enclosure to take a look at the war memorial and bell tower. The church door is open, allowing you to see inside from the porch behind a grille.
Then there are two options: make a round trip to the Croix du Châtelet or shorten the walk and head straight back to La Tendue.
Return trip to the Croix du Châtelet
(4) Turn your back to the church (yellow-red markings) and you will quickly come to a fork in the road. Take the right-hand path and take the time to enjoy the view of the Château de Châtillon-sur-Lison. Stay on this stony path. 600 metres from the village, the path begins to descend.
(5) Leave this path and climb up to the left into the pasture. There is a beautiful view of the Lison plateau, the Cussey-sur-Lison valley and the castle. Continue to the end of this new gravel road, despite a cross marking that tells you not to go any further, passing a barrier. Turn left at the edge of the woods and continue along this path to the water tower. Climb the steps on the right to the foot of the cross.
(6) Beautiful view of the village of Lizine. Descend carefully and return to the church.
(4) Continue the route as described below.
Direct return to La Tendue
(4) Go around the church and take Rue de l'Église. You will pass the old presbytery with its terracotta tile cladding and a magnificent calvary erected around 1500 within the parish enclosure. A little further on, you will see an old lean-to with a slate roof, and at the end of it, a wash house dating from 1884 and an oratory dedicated to the God of Mercy, erected in 1668 in gratitude by the villagers for having escaped cholera.
Then turn right onto Grande Rue and immediately left onto Rue de la Tendue. Continue for 200 metres.
(7) Turn right onto the grassy path to visit the Villevoz fountain and its three stepped basins built in 1663. Return to the small road and continue right until you reach the forest. Before entering the woods, take in the lovely view of Lizine, overlooked by the fortified house of Châtillon-sur-Lison.
Then, at the fork, turn right and continue along this path, which makes two successive left turns before starting a hairpin bend to the right further on.
(8) At the second hairpin bend, take the grassy path on the left. Soon after, at a crossroads, continue uphill on the left. You will reach the departmental road 103, which you follow to the right, passing a signpost that you ignore, continuing to the first bend to descend to the Gouille Noire viewpoint via the stony path.
(9) Return to the signpost and turn right into the beautiful pine forest, following the ledges to discover the superb mossy sharp limestone pavement of the Bois des Serpents, which resemble menhirs
(10) Continue along the heights of the Loue. You will soon arrive at the Piquette viewpoint overlooking the valley.
(11) Then turn your back to the valley and you will soon come to a fork. Go up to the left towards the Belvédère du Moulin Sapin. At the next crossroads (in an X shape), continue straight ahead to the right, crossing the departmental road and heading for the viewpoint. There is a lovely view of the bell tower of Lizine and the Lison valley.
(12) Return to the X-shaped junction and descend to the left (second sign for Belvédère). Cross the departmental road to find a path, then a fork just after it. Continue downhill to the right. Cross the road again and continue downhill on the path opposite. Once you are close to the road again, continue a little further into the woods along the path on the right, which joins the departmental road in the bend. Keep right on this road, which soon makes a hairpin bend to the right. Immediately after, turn left onto the stony path that leads to the signpost.
(1) Return to your car by going down the path on the right (S/E).
The route includes cliff-side paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Good footwear is essential and walking sticks are recommended.
