Tour of Lake Val Joly (mountain biking)

A route for experienced mountain bikers. The views around the lake and the forest and bocage landscape are remarkable, but the technical and physical difficulties will discourage beginners. Wildlife can be observed, if you know how to remain discreet.

Description of the route

Park in the resort car parks.

(S/E) From the Maison des Cycles, with the car park opposite, turn right towards the lake. Continue along the lake shore, passing under the mini golf course. Then turn right to follow the lake shore towards the pedalos, going around the centre of the resort and its water sports complex (swimming pool). Pass the complex and you will come to an intersection.

(1) Keep to the right, as close as possible to the shore, towards the pre-dam. At the birdwatching station, go up the tarmac path on the right. At Rue du Touvent, D 83, make a slight detour to the right to pick up the dirt track opposite the Grand Rieux, which climbs between the copses. You will arrive at Rue du Grand Rieux.

(2) Follow the tarmac road to the left and, at the blue stone oratory, leave the road and take the sunken path that descends to the right. Back on Rue du Grand Rieux, continue downhill to the right until you reach Chemin du Petit Moulin.

(3) Turn left onto this path. It passes by the foot of the pond and climbs up to the right through the woods. On the plateau, before the road, turn right onto the wide path. Further on, this path forks; take the left fork onto a narrower path that descends. Be careful and adjust your speed. You will arrive at the D83.

(4) Temporary alternative, avoiding the footbridge for safety reasons. At Rue du Touvent, D83, turn left and cross Eppe-Sauvage. Turn right in front of the church, Rue de Verdun. After crossing the Montbliart on a bridge, turn immediately right onto Chemin de Trélon, D 119. You will come to a fork with Rue de la Marbrerie.

(5) Turn right and continue on the left at the junction onto a stabilised path. Pass by the foot of the large house (return to the initial route) and go up to the left, still on Chemin de la Marbrerie. At the end, turn left onto the narrower path that goes up between hedges. Pass three-way junctions, first on the right and then on the left, to return to the road, on the Vieux Chemin de Trélon. Continue along this road until you reach the D119.

(6) Continue straight ahead and, further on, leave the road on the right onto a forest path marked with an ONF sign (this section can be muddy at times, so follow the markings carefully). You will come out onto a wide, stabilised track. Take this to the right, ignore the Chemin de l'Archangros which branches off to the left near a bench, and continue straight ahead. Continue to a fork with a dirt track.

(7) Leave the track and take a dirt track that branches off to the left, which descends towards the lake shore. At the arboretum, turn left and follow the fence. Please note that the path can be muddy in wet weather. Stay on the main track, which climbs and descends regularly. You will arrive at the Route Forestière de l'Archangros.

(8) Cut across and make a slight first turn left then right to rejoin the track. You will come out again on the Route de l'Archangros. At the lake, take the bridge over a branch of the Voyon. At the roundabout, leave the road on the right and take a small path towards a public wooden shelter. The path winds through the undergrowth, then follows the riverbank above. You will have several breathtaking views of the Val-Joly resort on the opposite bank. You will arrive at the forest path at the end of a branch of the lake and a pond.

(9) Go up the latter and follow it to the right. After a straight grassy path and a white barrier, you will come out onto the Chemin du Fonds des Coqs road. Turn left onto Rue de Champiau.

(10) Turn right onto this road, which crosses the hamlet of the same name and joins Willies after crossing the bridge over the Helpe Majeure. You will then arrive at Rue Tavaux.

(11) Turn left. At the end, turn right. Carefully cross the Route du Val-Joly, D133. Continue to a fork in the road, near a wood.

(12) Turn right onto a stony path. At the fork, turn left onto Rue de Camberlin, leaving a large farm on your right (be careful at the back of this farm, as at certain times a gate is sometimes closed to keep the cows in; make sure you close it behind you).
The path is wide and descends, running alongside the Val-Joly campsite on your left and passing under a footbridge. At the end, turn right and you will find yourself back on the Val-Joly road, the D133. Cross at the designated crossings and turn left onto the cycle path shared with pedestrians.
Be courteous and adjust your speed.
Cross the bridge over a branch of the lake and return to Val-Joly station, coming back towards the water sports centre via a stabilised path, then take the footbridge and the upper path on the left to avoid pedestrians and return to the cycle centre (S/E).
