Lancieux via the Chemin des Poissonniers

It is the morning light that reveals the full charm of Lancieux Bay, with its panoramic view of the Îles des Ebihens and the east coast of Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, as you walk along the lively beaches of Saint-Sieu and Les Briantais. The coastal path (GR® 34) overlooks the rocky shore, leading to the highest point on the coast at Tertre de Cordieu. The return journey takes you beneath a canopy of greenery that covers the Chemin des Poissonniers.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Church of Saint-Cieux in Lancieux.

(S/E) Walk past the main porch of the building and turn left onto Rue de l’Église. After 200 m, at the roundabout, turn right onto Rue de la Plage, which leads to Saint-Sieuc Beach.
Depending on how busy it is with tourists, you can walk past the beach huts, where you should take the first set of steps to join Boulevard de la Mer (route).

(1) It follows the coastline and joins theGR® 34 trail before Pointe de Buglais.

(2) Follow the coastal path to reach Briantais Beach.

(3) There, you will need to leave the path and head down to the beach. Walk along the beach until you reach its end, where you will find the path, the entrance to which is marked by a post (with a yellow marker).
The path goes round Tertre Corlieu and descends to a boat launch. Walk up the path for 10 metres and rejoin the path on the right.

(4) At the fork, there are two possible paths. Take the one on the left, leaving the shore, to enter the grassy countryside.

(5) The path joins a gravel track that climbs to the right and leads onto the D786.

(6) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow Rue de Bodard straight ahead. At the second junction, take the road on your left. The road curves and, after 150 m, opens out to the right onto Chemin des Poissonniers, lined with tall oak trees.

(7) Follow it all the way to the end. It leads to the village of Lancieux via Rue de Daligois.

(8) Follow this street to the left and continue along Rue de la Frottrais until you reach the junction with Rue Henri Samson (note the 16th-century Croix de Cohinlac at the corner of the street), where you should turn left. It crosses Rue Nationale and leads to Rue du Centre. Follow Rue de l’Église to return to the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Moulin Le Buglais, also known as the Moulin des Bénédictins, was built by the monks of Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer Abbey in the 16th–17th centuries. It operated until 1926, powered by a gas engine. It was restored in 1990, and its mechanism is identical to the original. Listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments; it is open to visitors. You can reach it from the point (6), 400 m away, by turning left onto the departmental road.

All that remains of the Old Church, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, is this massive square tower made of large blocks of granite and topped by an octagonal bell tower. It is also listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments.

A pleasant route along the GR34; there are quite a few people on the outskirts of town, but after that it’s completely deserted. Be careful: the Chemin des Poissonniers is very muddy, so don’t attempt it in winter wearing trainers – otherwise it’s a lovely walk.

A bit disappointed! The coastal path is very nice, but when you leave it, it's
much less "pleasant": impassable, muddy path, forced to go through the field
next to it.
lots of tarmac

A pleasant walk, partly along the GR34. The urban section doesn’t have too much traffic. On the paths, it’s barely passable in places – there are some VERY muddy sections!
Worth doing again, but in dry weather.

The coastal path is lovely, with stunning views of Saint-Jacut-de-Mer and the Île des Ébihens, but otherwise there are a lot of roads; overall, I was rather disappointed.

We got a bit lost on the way out of the beach, but by using a bit of common sense and consulting the map, we managed to find our way back without too much trouble.
