The Roize Circuit

This walk, starting from Voreppe, takes you through a few old hamlets of Voreppe, through the woodland and along the Roize torrent.
The Roize torrent is one of the most powerful in the Chartreuse. In mid-May, it wasn’t showing off its full power.
The Roize has powered a number of facilities: mills, sawmills and tanneries, and has helped make Voreppe a small economic hub in the Isère valley.

Description of the walk

Gradins de la Roize car park.
(S/E) From the car park, follow the path marked No. 4. At the end of the cemetery, follow the path that joins the Route de Racin. Take this road and leave it at a bend. Continue for about 100m.

(1) Turn left onto a path that cuts across a sharp bend in the road. At the junction with the road, pass through a group of houses and continue due north.

(2) At the junction with a path (imposing buildings on the left), first turn left then right and continue towards the hamlet of Racin, which you cross. Continue along this road until the next fork.

(3) Let the Route de Chalais branch off to the right and take the Chemin du Groupe Raymond, which leads downhill. 50 metres further on, at a Y-junction, the path continues to the right.
At the end of this path, let the path lead towards private properties and head down to the left. Pass the Rigonnière day centre on your right.

(4) After the day-care centre, the main path continues to the right. Head back up through the woodland along the left bank of the Roize.

(5) Cross the stream at the Fond de la Roize ford. The path continues along the right bank, still through the woods, to Préfanton.
Continue along the path to the village of Pommiers, at a place called l’Ancienne Église. There you will find a cross marking the site of Pommiers’ first church.

(6) After about a hundred metres, take the road on the left near the house known as "des Templiers". The road continues as a path which you should follow.

(7) Continue to a bridge which allows you to cross the Roize torrent once more; walk alongside a small dam designed to protect the village of Voreppe in the event of severe flooding

(8) At this point, the road continues down towards Voreppe. A path on the right takes you as close as possible to the Roize, near an old hydroelectric power station.
The path crosses a bridge once more.

(9) Continue to the A-road, which you should take to the left. Follow the A-road until you reach the car park entrance (S/E).

A lovely walk that’s more challenging than you might think at first glance. Your efforts are rewarded by walks through beautifully restored hamlets and stunning views.
The ford at the bottom of Roize is easy to cross.
To avoid the section of the walk along the Col de la Placette road at the end of the hike, take the challenging but scenic climb from the Roize up to the hamlet of Saint Nizier, then head straight down to the hikers’ car park via small tarmac roads and footpaths: an additional 60 m of elevation gain.

A lovely walk, beautiful scenery, stunning views. However, there is an error in the stated elevation gain, which is 470m instead of 410m. At point 4, at La Rigonnière, there is indeed a risk of getting lost as the Roize ford is signposted to the left. But this is the lower ford. You must follow the guidebook carefully and head up to the right towards Chalais via La Gerboudière (no. 4) to reach the upper ford, which then descends towards L’Ancienne Eglise. Follow the map and guidebook closely throughout the entire route.

A pleasant circular walk, particularly on a hot day, as the walk mainly follows a path through the woods, keeping you more or less away from the Roize stream except when you cross the ford.
There are some lovely views, particularly of the Dent de Moirans, plus you pass through a few charming hamlets.

A lovely, fairly easy walk, mostly through woodland. Ideal for a short getaway and a picnic in the cool shade by the stream.

It’s a lovely walk, with the highlight being the crossing of the Roize stream at the ford! The climb is gradual and easy to manage.
However, I did the walk in the wrong direction; at point 3, I carried on straight ahead instead of turning right... I didn’t quite understand the description and, above all, I was misled by the yellow hiking signs! Don’t follow these signs and make sure you follow the directions in the guidebook... I therefore arrived at the Roize dam and made my way up to the Old Church via the path I should have taken for the return journey.
