The Chemin des Mariniers in Voreppe

This walk is ideal for families. It gives you an insight into the age-old struggle of the people of Voreppe against the flooding of their two main rivers, the Roize and the Isère. These rivers have also been a source of wealth for centuries. The Roize powered numerous mills, sawmills and water-driven hammers. The Isère, the main route southwards until the advent of the railway, provided work for boatmen.

Trail No. 12 "Western Chartreuse Trails". This is the only one in this series that is not circular, to avoid using the greenway frequented by many cyclists.

Description of the walk

Park in the hikers’ car park on Rue Pré Boulat, next to the Parking des Gradins de Roize in Voreppe

Follow signpost no . 12, marked in yellow.

(S/E) Take the road leading down to Voreppe on the left bank of the Roize. Cross the roundabout keeping the Roize on your left, and head down to the junction with the D1075.

(1) Cross the D1075. In front of you are the remains of the blockhouses built by Italian soldiers in 1943.
Cross the bridge over the Roize and take the cycle path on the left. Follow this path, keeping the Roize on your left, to the drainage basin at the low point. Once you reach the lower section, follow the cycle path to the footbridge at the end of the pond.

(2) Go behind the barrier and continue along this unpaved, shaded path. Follow the canal embankment which collects the waters of the Roize and the Palluel. At the end of this shaded path, continue along the paved path which joins the Isère and the cycle path.

(3) When you reach the cycle path running alongside the Isère, cross it and head up to your left for about 1.8 km, between the Isère on your right and the cycle path on your left. When the path rejoins the cycle path, follow it for 200 m to the footbridge on the left.

(4) Cross the footbridge and turn immediately left until you reach the second footbridge to rejoin the path you left at the spillway.

(2) Head back up towards Voreppe, following the Roize along the path you took on the way there, until you reach the hikers’ car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Roize embankment was built between 1750 and 1850, stretching from the Voeu de Ville bridge (hikers’ car park) to the Roize outfall basin.

In the lower part of this walk, you are on the canal embankment that was used to drain the marshy plain.
The localities known as "Les Îles" (des Chartreux, Machuret, etc.) were alluvial areas once surrounded by the meandering branches of the Isère.
On the right: ponds (La Volma, L’Île Rose) were created by the extraction of materials used for the construction of the motorway.

An added bonus to round off this walk: take the historical and heritage walk through the old village of Voreppe.

Hello
It was very busy with cyclists, so great care was needed (a Friday during the holidays). At this time of year, in February, only attempt this route if it has been dry for several days; otherwise, sections will be very muddy, or even closed. Odours from the sewage treatment plant were noticeable. Ducks and seagulls. We started from the bottom to reduce the elevation gain for those not used to climbing.
Thank you

A very easy and pleasant walk, as you follow the Roize river and then, on the way back, the Isère before heading back up along the banks of the Roize.
The only drawback is that part of the route follows cycle paths, so you need to be very careful of cyclists who don’t always make themselves visible (we did this walk on a Sunday; there might be fewer cyclists during the week).

Stunning scenery. In summer, it’s a cool, shady spot.
It might be best to leave your car at the entrance to Voreppe to avoid the tarmac road. It’s easy to bring children along on the route. Very easy and very beautiful

The first section, which involves crossing the main road and passing under the motorway, isn’t particularly pleasant, but after that it’s quiet and green, and the little path back along the banks of the Isère is charming, with the added bonus of no longer being on the cycle path.
Another great thing about this route is that it’s almost flat all the way!

A walk along the motorway – admittedly alongside the River Isère, but with the A-road on the other side. A noisy walk! At the start, you have to cross a roundabout and go under the motorway, which isn’t very pleasant. I won’t be doing it again! Nor would I recommend it!

On the way there, the route runs alongside the River Isère and various ponds. Please note: when you reach the cycle path, turn left; then, after the Roize valley, you will need to walk between the River Isère and the cycle path. You will be walking through tall grass. The path is not maintained.
