Le Teillon as seen from Peyroules

A route with a fairly steep climb, rewarding you, once at the summit, with a 360° view of the Southern Alps stretching all the way to the sea. Includes a visit to a chapel and the old village of Peyroules. Above 1,700 metres, there is no longer a clearly marked path; you’ll need to navigate using the GPX file, cairns and tracks on the ground.

Description of the walk

Park at the car park by Peyroules Town Hall.

(S/E) Walk round the town hall and join the D452 at Sainte-Anne Church. Turn right and follow the yellow markings for about 300 m.

(1) Go up the street on the left, which turns into a footpath after the Peyroules council workshops.

(2) At the Pré Neuf crossroads, take the wide path on the right for about 400 m.

(3) Take the path that climbs to the left towards the ridges; it narrows, passes through a forest and then continues its ascent to reach the Col des Portes.

(4) Leave the yellow markings and follow an old set of orange markings – which are not always easy to spot – towards the edge of the cliff. Follow the ridge along an old path.

(5) When you reach a meadow (with a ruined hut on the right), cross it and continue straight ahead, climbing through bushes and rocks: the markings appear from time to time.

(6) Once you reach a sort of plateau (elevation 1674), the markings become much scarcer. It’s best to ignore them and instead look out for a cairn to the right of the rocky ridge opposite and head towards it, keeping north. You’ll reach another cairn.

(7) The route becomes clearer as you simply head for the next cairn by turning left, due west, and winding your way through rocks and bushes. This will take you to the summit of Teillon aux Quatre Termes (elevation 1893).

(8) Take the yellow-marked route which descends steeply to the left towards the sheepfold, heading towards La Garde.

(9) At the sheepfold, turn left into the valley which descends south-east towards the ruins of another old sheepfold.

(10) Continue along the path which slopes to the left towards an altitude of 1,650 m and heads eastwards through the mountain pastures. You will reach a junction.

(11) Keep to the right on the main path, which alternates between relatively flat sections and steep, winding descents. You’ll reach a track before the Séguret farm.

(12) Turn left onto this track, heading due east, and walk past the farm. Then begin a long, sweeping descent to reach a junction near the Chapelle Saint-Pons.

(13) Turn right to reach the chapel.

(14) Leave the track and take a small path on the left, heading towards the ruins of old Peyroules.

(15) At the junction, follow the sign for “Peyroules – 2 km” to the left, along a path marked in yellow. Join the D452.

(16) Continue to the left, carefully following the road to return to the town hall car park (S/E).
