The starting point is in front of the church in Villette-de-Vienne.
() S/E: Leave the square by taking the departmental road north (towards the hill). When you reach the town hall, take the Ruelle des Abeilles opposite.
A little further on, turn right again onto Chemin des Ronces, which leads to Chemin du Colombier, which you take on the left. You will come to an imposing corrugated iron building (a silo, according to the IGN map). Go around it on the left.
(1) You will see the sign "Morand - alt. 220m". Go up to the right towards Bonnetière (you will see the yellow markings that you will follow for most of the walk). There is a slight incline. When you reach a flat area, a road comes in from the right. Take the dirt track on the left, which is closed to motor vehicles.
(2) After a left-hand bend, ignore the path coming from the right and the one coming from the left shortly afterwards (the yellow markings will help you make the right choice). A little further on, ignore a path that descends to the left. Pass under a power line with a double wooden pylon. You will come out onto a very small road. Take it on the left.
(3) After passing under a high-voltage power line, you will come to a T-junction. You will see a sign for "Bonnetière - alt. 329m". Turn right towards Taillis de Mure. On your left, you will have panoramic views of the Corbas plain and Vénissieux.
(4) Very soon, you will see the sign for "Taillis de Mure - alt. 338m" (the name on the sign is almost illegible). Take the dirt track in front of you. Ignore the two paths that quickly branch off to the left, leading up towards the woods (yellow markings). You will come to a complex crossroads (signposted "Montée de Fontagnère"). Opposite you is a dirt track. It is a no-entry road, except for residents and agricultural vehicles. Take this track and ignore the path on the left (continue to follow the yellow markings).
(5) You will come out onto a wider road. Take the left turn, but note the curiously placed sign on the right. It tells you to turn left to reach the Bois des Fauries, which is 800 metres away. Further on, ignore the path coming from the woods on the left.
(6) And, see how well things are organised. 800 metres further on, a sign tells you that you are at Bois des Fauries - altitude 323 metres (the information is a little faded). It tells you to turn right towards Villette (don't trust the mileage, as we're going to take a slightly longer route to pass in front of the Chapelle d'Illins).
(7) Very quickly, you will come to a T-junction. This time, the sign is completely illegible. Turn right towards Illins. Further on, at a fork with houses, turn left. You will arrive at a hamlet. At the end of the hamlet, the road curves slightly to the left. Take the path that goes straight ahead. You will temporarily leave the yellow markings. Very quickly, you will come to a road, which you take on the right. Be careful, as traffic can be fast. Walk on the left-hand side of the road. If you are in a group, walk in single file. If there are a lot of you, form several groups.
(8) You will soon reach a complex crossroads. Ignore the road on the right and the one on the left. There are two roads left, opposite you. Take the one on the left towards "Luzinay centre ville". A little further on, at a fork, take the Impasse du Réservoir on the right. You will see the yellow markings again. After the hamlet, the path narrows. Ignore the path that branches off to the left and descend steeply towards Illins. You will come to a small road, which you should take on the left.
(9) You will arrive at the Chapel of Illins (12th and 18thcenturies). Take the small road on the right. The entrance to the chapel grounds is on your left. Inside, there is a tap with water. Continue along the small road (still marked in yellow). After a while, it turns 90° to the right and climbs steeply up the hill (on your left, you will see the very old castle. It looks like a large country house). At the top of the hill, you will reach the castle farm. Turn left.
(10) When you reach the castle gate, turn right after enjoying the splendid view. Descend steeply to the village of Villette below you. Be sure to ignore a vague path on the left. When you reach the village, you will find yourself back on tarmac.
(11) Shortly afterwards, you will see a sign for "Les Brigands - alt. 228m". Continue along the lane towards the centre of the village.
(12) Very quickly, you will come to a crossroads with a sign for "Cugnet - alt. 228m". Turn left. Continue along the lane (Rue de la Forge) until you reach Rue des Serventières on your right. This will take you to Place de la Poste and, further on, to the church on your left. (S/E)
It's true that the last climb is a bit tough, but we loved the view and the path leading to the "golf course" (which is actually a wind sock resembling a flag)
