The Sentier des Puechs, short version

This hike crosses agricultural plateaus offering beautiful views of the Castraises plains to the south and the Lautrecaises plains to the west. You will cross meadows, undergrowth and small hamlets via communal paths or small local roads.
At the end of the hike, the trail passes by the Château de Montfa, which was the home of the ancestors of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. His father lived there until the early 20th century. Today, an association is working to rebuild this remarkable place steeped in history. The trail is markedPR® Yellow throughout.

Description of the walk

The hike starts from the car park behind Montfa Town Hall.

(S/E) At the start, turn right, north-east, onto the Route de Montredon (D59) then continue straight on along the Route des Collines to the hamlet of Graviac.

(1) Continue right, descending towards the Ruisseau de Bagas valley. Cross the road bridge and continue for 150 m without crossing the other road bridge.

(2) Turn right onto a path in the forest and join the D4.

(3) Caution: busy road! Turn left at the edge of the D4 and follow it to the hamlet of Les Fournials, which you cross until you reach the Route de Rudel.

(4) Take this road on the left and follow it to the hamlet of Rudel at a crossroads located at the exit (elevation 275).

(5) Turn left onto a narrow path through the woods and, after crossing a meadow, you will come to a cross-country track.

(6) Turn right onto the path that runs alongside the stream, heading due west: signposted Sentier des Puechs, long version. You will arrive at the Plancarié farm, directly below a power line.

(7) Follow the small road through the woods and join another cross-country road.

(8) Turn left onto this road, pass under the power line and continue for about 100 metres.

(9) Turn right onto a path between the fields, passing under the power line again, and arrive at Domaine de la Quintaine.

(10) Go around it and follow a path on the left that remains level.

(11) Turn left onto the path that climbs towards the castle, passing under the power line once again.

(12) At the foot of the castle, climb up to the left to reach the esplanade facing the ruins: beautiful view.

(13) Turn around.

(12) Continue left towards the Boudet farm and follow the road to a junction with another road.

(14) Follow the grassy path opposite. Cross a second road and continue opposite along the path until you reach the next road.

(15) Turn right towards the village.

(16) In the housing estate, turn left towards the centre of Montfa and the town hall car park (S/E).

A lovely walk with beautiful views, but far too many tarmac sections which spoil part of the walk. It is advisable to climb up to Montfa Castle to see the work carried out by the association and to enjoy the beautiful view.

Easy to follow, even in foggy weather, and the fact that there was a lot of road was my choice to avoid slipping on muddy trails, as the ground has been saturated with water in the south-west for some time.
So it's a very good trail if conditions are wet. I did the hike on a foggy Sunday during the Christmas holidays, so there were hardly any cars on the roads.

The route is easy, but does not offer particularly interesting scenery, and there is too much tarmac (very busy roads). There are few sections of trail in the countryside. Nevertheless, the highlight of this hike is the feudal castle, whose chapel tower has been restored. You can walk around the grounds, but the interior is private. The history of this castle, originally Catholic, which was attacked by Protestants during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, is interesting. Pierre de Lautrec, Baron of Montredon, moved there in the 15th century after exchanging it, along with other properties, for the barony of Montredon. The Château de Montfa therefore remained in the Lautrec family until the 20th century. The famous painter's name is Henri de Toulouse Lautrec Montfa.
