Description of the walk

Start at Roquecourbe, Place de la Mairie.

(S/E) Cross the bridge over the Agout. Continue left and go up Rue des Barris. Ignore Avenue des Burlats, which branches off to the right, and continue along Avenue de Lacrouzette.

(1) After about 250m along this avenue, turn left onto the path that starts between the hedges opposite the signpost for “Sainte-Juliane”.

(2) On the right, you will see a path leading from the car park on Route de Lacrouzette, but continue straight on along the path marked in yellow, which leads to the Sainte-Juliane excavation site.

(3) After visiting the excavation site, continue the route by following the yellow markings eastwards to reach the departmental road at Chemin de Cambon. Then turn right and follow the road (D30).

(4) Pass a lay-by at the side of the road and continue to the fork you passed on the way there.

(1) Then retrace your steps along the route taken on the way there to reach the Town Hall Square (S/E).

Worth a visit

At the site you can discover:

  • The remains of the church
  • A magnificent sandstone sarcophagus situated in the former choir of the church
  • On the left, around ten sarcophagi of various sizes
  • A little further down, urns carved directly into the ground
  • At the edge of the wooded area, the old steps.
  • Behind the church, in the wooded area, the remains of a smithy.

Information panels at the Sainte-Juliane excavation site.
You can write your comments about your visit in the visitors’ book available on site.

From the excavation site and the top of the climb, there is a beautiful view over the Agout valley and the village of Roquecourbe.

The road section is too long, rather uninteresting and, in places, dangerous as there are no pavements. The path section is very pleasant.

A visit to the Celtic site at Sainte-Julienne is the main attraction of this short walk, which starts and ends on a fairly busy country road with very narrow verges, making it a bit dangerous all the same. But the Celtic site is well worth it.
Nearby, in Ferrières, the Museum of Protestantism and Secularism is well worth a visit.

Hello, and thank you for this walk. I wasn’t familiar with the area; it’s really quite moving to be standing on the site of these excavations.
So, I took a detour onto the “Around Sainte-Juliane” route, which is a bit longer but just as pleasant.
One thing to note: at the end of point 2 on the “Around Sainte-Juliane” route, on the path leading towards Cambon, an electric fence has been installed.
Also, at point 5, just after coming out of the tunnel, as you’re about to take the path through the woods leading to the Cambon farm, you can see crosses on the trees. I thought I’d gone the wrong way and didn’t take that path at first, thinking the crosses meant ‘do not pass’...

I highly recommend this shaded and relatively easy walk to everyone, with its undergrowth whose scents are a delight... And the ferns are simply marvellous... My only regret is a bit too much tarmac, and a few unwelcome speeders...

A really interesting and well-presented excavation site (information boards, booklet)
It’s a shame that most of the route is along the road (dangerous as cars drive quite fast). It’s best to turn back for the return journey.

The excavation site itself is very interesting, but much of the route takes place on the road.

For those interested in local history, this is a lovely and informative walk. Please note that much of the route is along roads.
